Dominatrix - Q&A with Luna Vassarotti

Very few works are capable of capturing the essence of their own time, while continuing to stay relevant long after they're produced. Dominatrix, the latest release by Berlin-based record label Instruments of Discipline ("IOD"), is definitely one of these works. Unearthed from 1980's New York City, Dominatrix is equal parts electro-punk, synthpop, proto-techno and dungeon soundtrack. Stuart Argabright is the man behind Dominatrix. For decades he has been a prolific producer in electronic music and his projects Ike Yard and Black Rain have been huge influences on countless other artists.  The track, "Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight", was a relative hit for Argabright and vocalist Dominque Davalos upon its release in 1984.  However, since the 80's little has been heard from the project until now. When we saw new material was being released by one of our favorite contemporary labels, we were interested in discovering more. We reached out to IOD label head, Luna Vassarotti, and she provided us with some great background and historical context. Please find the Q&A with Luna below.

The Brvtalist: Dominatrix is an unearthed gem from 1980's New York City. What drew you to the sound and aesthetic of this project? Also, is this unreleased material or a re-issue?

Luna Vassarotti: I’ve always been a fan of Ike Yard and Stuart Argabright’s more recent project, Black Rain. I was introduced to Stuart through TJ Cowgill from King Dude/Not Just Religious Music by email and I got to meet him in person at the Blackest Ever Black showcase in Berlin last year. We kept in touch and that’s when Stuart suggested un-released Dominatrix material for a release on my label. I fell in love with the tracks on the spot; they had an interesting mix of something timeless but also portrayed the danceable, synth-pop, club sound that I imagine you would hear in NY clubs in the mid 80’s. I still feel like the record’s sound is hard to categorize but that’s the reason I was drawn to it for an IOD release.

TB: I love the cover art! I especially like when labels take older material and reinvigorate it with new artwork and design. Talk about the idea for the cover and what you wanted to do with it.

LV: Thank you! Stuart gave me carte blanche for the cover, which I felt very honored by.  The idea first came through talking about how the Dominatrix project was born. The story, which is also explained in the release bio, began when a young Stuart met a beautiful, mysterious older woman in a corvette while hitchhiking in the States. They became friends and spent many nights together at her East Side apartment, getting high and listening to Bowie records. After he noticed the bull whips and manacles hanging in her closet, it became apparent that his friend’s occupation was chaining, whipping, and torturing upscale Manhattan businessmen - who were very willing victims and had the credit card bills to prove it. This project came to life because of his sincere admiration and respect for the professional dominatrix. From there it was evident to me that the Dominatrix had to be the main focus for the cover. I wanted something sexy but at the same time austere - a contrast between hard and soft, pleasure and pain, etc. Milk came to my mind as a playful contrast with the leather whip and gloves. It created a surreal environment which I think embodies the qualities of the music I was drawn to. I was lucky to have my boyfriend help me with the shots as he’s an amazing photographer.

TB: Instruments of Discipline is a great boutique label with a varied sound. How do you approach looking for artists to release and is there an underlying theme or concept with what you put out?

LV: I get quite a few demos by mail and I tend to go for the ones I like regardless of genre. I really started the label when I moved to Berlin and it has been an amazing source of inspiration. I’ve seen so many great shows and I get introduced to so much interesting work here. I have always travelled and I love meeting people so I still get recommendations from all over the place but I just follow and trust my own personal taste. It can be pretty eclectic, but I think this is how one creates something with a sense of their own character. The label is still very young and I don’t really think there is an underlying theme or concept. I believe I started with an ideal in mind but then found I was drawn to releasing things which didn’t exactly fit that mold, so rather than let a concept stop me it has evolved. That said, the label will always tend toward an obscure, darker aesthetic of sound.  I have always been attracted to a playful kind of violence and perhaps the idea of an apocalyptic fairytale.

Lunar Lodge // Mai Mai Mai (Instruments of Discipline, 2014)

TB: What's next from Instruments of Discipline?

LV:  I am releasing an album called Black Box Recordings, which is a collaboration between artist Robert Skrzyński (Micromelancolie) and Mike Bjella (GOG). I'm also co-releasing Elisabeth Dixon’s debut EP with Australian label Trait Records and both should be out by the end of the year. A Dominatrix remix album is also in the works. Finally, there is a special surprise release that must remain a secret until next year. I can only say that it’s a re-release of a NY act that was only ever out on tape. It will be a co-released with the great Berlin label [Aufnahme & Wiedergabe].

We would like to thank Luna Vassarotti for her time and great responses. Instruments of Discipline is a label we immediately identified with as it maintains a very good sense of cohesiveness while not adhering to a strict set of rules or boundaries. We also love art and music that is not easily categorized and IOD releases are always interesting and unique. We look forward to hearing more from Luna and her great label. For more information and to purchase Dominatrix please visit Instruments of Discipline.

Passing - "Distance"

The Brvtalist is proud to premiere the debut track by Los Angeles-based Passing. Comprised of Christopher Myrick (Bestial Mouths) and Blair Minor (Make U Hot),  Passing combines elements of minimal synth, post-punk and ebm to create a wonderfully dark, cutting sound that can still find its home on the dance floor. The duo's bass heavy, distorted beats are influenced by British Murder Boys, Fad Gadget, The Hacker, Silent Servant, In Trance 95 and the spaces in between.  Using analog hardware and chaotic sampling, Myrick's vocals are occasionally audible. A debut EP is planned for release in Winter 2015 and US and European tour dates will follow.  We are honored to bring you their first track, "Distance", and look forward to hearing more material.

New Brvtalism No. 031

A blackened soul leaves you numb. Pain becomes your pleasure and you yearn for the dead of night. You now serve a new master.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix by California-based Tuxedo Gleam. Mixing elements of cold, dark and synth wave, Tuxedo Gleam crafts beautifully seductive tracks that submerge the listener into a dark state of equal parts gloom and glamour. The project is driven by the synthesizer stylings of Aunt Gleam and the moment we heard the 2013's "Darkened Corners", we were hooked. That lead to other releases including one of our favorite tracks of the year, "Object of Desire", out on Brvtalist favorite Lentonia. New material is due out by the end of year and live shows will follow. In the meantime, please enjoy this incredible mix which showcases the project's DNA as well as some our of favorite contemporary synth acts.  We have also included the video for "Penetrate", which is an intense psychic journey directed and shot by Sonny Frisco.

For more Tuxedo Gleam please visit Soundcloud, Bandcamp and Facebook.

Hørd - EP #2 Remixes

The Brvtalist is proud to premiere four new remixes from the latest EP by French dark wave project Hørd.  Founded in 2013 by musician and video-artist Sebastien Carl in Bordeaux, Hørd masterfully combines elements of synth wave and complex melancholia in a package that invokes dark, sinister environments and lustful rhythms.

Out on October 15th (7" vinyl + digital format) on French labels Stellar Kinematics, Ol' Dirty Dancin and Anywave, EP #2 contains the stellar tracks "Speak" and "Let Them Burn".  The four remixes are bonus tracks by excellent producers Black Bug, Hante, AVGVST and Volcan. Each remix brings a distinct touch that ranges from Black Bug's ominous anthem to Hante's synth-driven dance floor banger, Volcan's electro-tinged offering and AVGVST's slow burning ritual.  We love the original material and these versions only add to the stellar release.  We asked Hørd for some comments on the EP and he graciously responded with these insightful remarks:

This release is very important for me because it's my first vinyl release, and also the first time I have collaborated with these labels, which were very implied in all the levels of the record.
These tracks reflect both aspects of my music - one could be described as "very cold pop", with lyrics, melody, chorus etc. And the other one, instrumental, more narrative, and more focused on sounds.

About the remixes: I am very proud to have such great remixers for my EP, I know all of them personally and they are all involved in personal and solo projects as well, which makes sense to me. I also have particular affinities with their projects and their music. It's been really interesting to communicate with each other, about their remixes, and my original tracks, as we did for the EP #2.

For your listening pleasure, please find all four remixes streaming below:

Thank you to Aurel from Anywave for assistance with this feature and we can't wait for the vinyl to be released.  For purchasing please visit:

Blitzkrieg Baby - "There Will Be Casualties"

Now listening at Brvtalist HQ - the new EP by Norwegian industrial pop act Blitzkrieg Baby.  Out now on the always impressive Beläten, "Cannibal Commando" is a five track single side cassette release that is filled with Blitzkrieg's signature mark of twisted, post-apocalyptic industrial mayhem. Channeling some of the ugliest aspects of humanity, the material is a darker, more complex follow up to the group's "Kid's World" EP, also released by Beläten.  The Brvtalist is always interested in completely transforming the pop paradigm and we love how Blitzkrieg's work pushes the boundaries of industrial, noise, and yes, even pop further and further. We picked one of our favorite tracks from the release for your listening pleasure.

Please visit Beläten and Facebook for more information and purchasing.

The Lonati Collection

Very few things can represent as much as a motorcycle.  The freedom, independence and style of a single rider, man-made machine is a very beautiful thing.  As is the case with cars, Americans have created some of the most iconic and groundbreaking examples of this two wheel mode of transportation.  The progression of the motorcycle from its inception to now is a great story but there is just something about some of the early models that are undeniably appealing.  Companies like Indian, Henderson and Harley-Davidson created some of the most unique and well- crafted machines during the first half of the 20th century.  Their allure has continued to grow over time and that's why we were so excited to see this particular collection of motorcycles.

1927 Indian 600cc Scout, "Wall of Death"

Taking place from October 17 - October 18, Bonham's presents The Lonati Collection of rare and exquisite motorcycles at the auction house's Autumn Stafford Sale.  CEO of the Santoni Group, Tiberio Lonati, is a well known avid motorcycle collector.  "Mr. Lonati loved what motorcycles represent, 'complete freedom', the open road, something highly synonymous with US motorcycle marque, Harley-Davidson – which is perhaps why he had so many!" From Bonhams:

Stored in an astonishing private museum of motorcycles, the prized collection celebrates American marques from across pivotal points in motorcycle manufacture. Highlights include a 1910 Pierce 688cc Four, estimate £60,000-80,000, a 1930 Indian 1,265cc Model 402 Four-cylinder Combination, estimate £40,000-50,000.

The Lonati Collection began with Tiberio's son, Francesco, who has a great love for motorcycles. With his enthusiasm for the machines, coupled with knowledge of his father's likes, Francesco managed to persuade his father to purchase his first motorcycle – a civilianised 1942 Harley-Davidson WLA, now offered at estimate £14,000-18,000. This first motorcycle ignited a passion, and soon Mr. Lonati expanded to a vast sixty motorcycle collection, all housed in a private museum at the Santoni factory in Brescia, Italy.

The collection includes a variety of marques and models, including a 1916 Henderson 1,000cc Model F, estimate £30,000-40,000, pre-war great the 1911 Flying Merkel 500cc 'Racer', estimate £16,000-20,000, a 1920 Harley-Davidson Model J, estimate £18,000-24,000, and at one-hundred years old, the 1915 Thor 1,000cc Model U, estimate £28,000-25,000.

1928 Excelsior 750cc Super-X Frame

The motorcycles found in this collection are incredible examples of American design, technology and manufacturing.  The details of such machines are astonishing and many of these items transcend the automotive genre and move into amazing works of art.  People who can appreciate well made, complex systems will immediately be drawn to some of these bikes regardless if you ride or not.  The Brvtalist always likes to showcase such beautifully brvtal machines. For more information and to see the rest of the collection please visit Bonhams.

New Brvtalism No. 030

You awake to sounds unknown. Drifting through the dark, you have now lost your way. Endless is the night that traps you.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix by Los Angeles-based experimental electronic artist Sleep Clinic. One of the many great projects of Jeff Swearengin, Sleep Clinic is defined by dark, cerebral electronics that plunges the listener into the depths of time and space. Active since 2005, Sleep Clinic has released material on Decisive Sound, Squarewav and Chondritic Sound.

Available next week on the upstart, Ann Arbor-based label Atrium, Sleep Clinic will release "Night City", an album that was recorded in two parts separated by several years. Each half has a distinct feel and the record progresses from a stage of awakening to full consciousness. The electronics maintain a quiet, pensive feeling while still resonating very loudly. We love the almost soundtrack-like compositions that create a biting, sonic narrative.  From the artist:

The performances within Night City were originally recorded in March of 2010. Three of the original tracks and their titles were taken off and Anesthesia 3 , Night City 2 and Night City 3 were all recorded in July of 2015 using the same rig used in 2010 with very minor fine tuning.

The title does reach to William Gibson's Neuromancer to some degree and drawing a parallel into the sprawl that is Los Angeles and the effects that it can have on one's choices and destination after being in it for long periods paticularly with an unchecked trajectory, and the parallel of being in hallucinatory states as being jacked in to the grid of cyberspace, where physics, properties, and laws have different parameters. Like a technicolored and sterilized version of William Burroughs' Interzone...Night City was alive, and breathing, and conscious for me.

I found myself particularly dissociated and compartmentalized by my relationships and myself during the period of time I started these recordings. I started to take that internal landscape and externalize it through heavy use of dissociative drugs. I would find myself mapping out the city late at night in a slipstream of hallucinatory and surreal vantages and perspectives shifting, like in a dream when you are in a place or see a person that looks familiar but its energy is totally different and you know it isn't the same place or person.

I no longer knew the days, and the night time I was communicating within was this seemingly isolated place with very few participants. I had finally succeeded without trying, to live fully ejected, in a dream like fugue state that constantly swirled its subtly or aggression on a sliding scale basis.

These songs are soundtrack based vignettes into these moments where I traversed these inner-spaces I was allowing myself to belong to; functioning also like blind contour drawings of who and where I was during the origins of these recordings. They also at the same time describe these emptied out moments of relief and peace from my reality and nonreality...working on this and what it did for me was the actual effect I was hoping for all along. The short bursts of clarity and stability that would come in waves of a week or two at a time would yield these recording experiments.  Consciously, these were experiments that also explored the nature of interface and the results that are produced by the abilities of that interface and its limitations as well.

This release does also in a way act as a precursor to my follow up to 'A Chance, A Curse' on Chondritic Sound entitled, Stray Light [more to do with the actual technical discovery and cleaning of light in an optical system or in a network that is not intended to be there than it is with the location in Neuromancer]..Stray Light is not anywhere as pretty and clean as Night City but marks a continued shift in sound and styles. -Jeff Swearengin, Los Angeles 2015

New Brvtalism No. 030 is an extended exploration of many of the themes found on "Night City". You will find yourself drifting through endless urban sprawl and lush Metropolitan soundscapes. We would like to thank Sleep Clinic for this truly epic contribution to our series. "Night City" is out on October 2, 2015 and below please find an album preview streaming for a very limited time.  For more information, please visit Facebook, Soundcloud and Bandcamp.

New Brvtalism No. 029

An unfathomable force triggers devastating effects. The mind is ill-equipped for what lies ahead. Prepare for cerebral ruin.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix by Barnett + Coloccia. One of our favorite projects on the always incredible Blackest Ever Black, Alex Barnett and Faith Coloccia have combined forces on two albums that are truly works of art. Combining elements of dark, sinister electronics and ethereal sonic experiments, both Retrieval and Weld continue to mystify us the more we listen. Exploring both sound and space, their compositions have a philosophical approach that is nearly unrivaled.

The duo are currently in the planning stages for a new album and we can expect the cassette version of Weld to be released soon. In the meantime, both are also active with other endeavors.  Alex Barnett has solo project called Champagne Mirrors and will be completing a new tape and  shows on the West Coast in late October, including Non Plus Ultra in Los Angeles on the 24th.  He is also in Oakeater and they have a full length album, "Aquarius", coming out on SIGE records in the fall of this year. Faith is in a project called Mamiffer and the group has two shows coming up with Chelsea Wolfe on Sept 30th in Vancouver BC and October 2nd in Bellingham WA. Mamiffer has a new record also coming out this fall on SIGE which is a collaboration with Daniel Menche called "Crater".
