New Brvtalism No. 033

In a haunted realm, you are overcome with fear. Each step is more difficult than the next. Eternal solitude is your new fate.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix by Alessandro Adriani. Initially based in Rome and now headquartered in Berlin, Adriani and his label Mannequin Records are key components of the  the minimal synth revival and the label's output is no less than essential. Having reissued the work of artists such as The Neon Judgment, Dust and The Actor, Mannequin continues to pioneer the sound with new acts like Void Vision and Maoupa Mazzocchetti.

New Brvtalism No. 033 is a journey through the tapes of the Mannequin archives. Some recently digitized by Adriani and some already received in digital format, expect to hear cassette obscurities, rare tracks and forthcoming Mannequin releases. It's an honor to present such a thought provoking mix and we would like to thank Alessandro for his contribution. If you are in Berlin this Halloween, be sure to attend the Herzschlag and Mannequin Records show featuring In Aeternam Vale and Void Vision live. For more information please visit the label's official site, Facebook and Soundcloud.

Diana Berti - Tragedy Of The Uncommons

The Brvtalist is proud to feature the latest release by experimental ambient project, Diana Berti. Out Halloween on Cuss Fetish, a label with a very impressive discography, Diana Berti is a non categorical project, operating within ambient, noise, experimental and even techno. The artist behind Berti is Violet Poison, a prolific producer who continues to push the boundaries of sonic exploration and refuses to be inhibited by genres or conventional structure.

Diana Berti - Tragedy Of The Uncommons (Cuss Fetish, 2015)

Berti's latest work is titled Tragedy Of The Uncommons. A truly conceptual piece of art, Tragedy is a sonic journey that evokes buried emotions and puts listeners into varied psychological states.  The beautifully composed ambient works weave between brightness, darkness and depth, and while there are few vocals, it's clear there is a narrative.  We were fortunate enough to get in touch with the artist and requested any information or background about the release. Here is what we received:

“The metaphysicals and spirituals of love”.

Diana Berti is the actress Alessandra Acciai in Lamberto Bava’s giallo/horror movie “Il Gioko” (1989). I was fascinated by Berti’s fragility (in the movie she’s a young teacher from Lucca’s countryside (Tuscany), her native village is Borgo a Mozzano, a little village I used to go through by car when I was going to Abetone (Tuscan’s Apennines) with my parents during the summers of the 1980's). There’s a strong link between the landscape, the music, the movie and my childhood.

Diana Berti lacks self-esteem and she’s mocked and avoided by her fellow countrymen and countrywomen just because she had a nervous breakdown (a reference in the album title, “Tragedy of the Uncommons”) I used dialogue from the movie in some tracks, processed by distortion, reverb and delay, to accentuate the most dramatic moments, to fit well with music and track titles. On the first track there’s a little divagation: the voice is from Dino Campana (an Italian visionary poet from early 1900s) and the poem is named “In un momento…”, I wanted to use it to accentuate the romanticism. I can say the “sonic-plot” behind Berti lies in Paris, a city that means a lot for me (despite having been there just two times). There I have beautiful female friendships that changed my life and my attitude in a splendid way.

Musically speaking, I am influenced by the works of Suzanne Ciani (“Seven Waves”, 1982), Erik Satie (Gymnopédies, almost), Enno Velthuys (his whole discography), jingles/themes of magic/esoteric shows broadcasted in Tuscany’s TV channels during the 80’s, background music from metaphysical giallo/horror movies from the same decade (as in Dario Argento’s “Phenomena”).

If you pay attention, the main element of each track is a sequencer. I liked this cyclic nature, these rhythmic melodies in a minimalist interpretation, with subtle and imperceptible variations. Dorian scale, Korg Poly 800, some distortion, reverb, delay and some low-pitched ring modulation to create rhythmic articulation.

We are also thrilled to premiere a new track off the record, which is titled "A Fragile Bird Out Of The Nest". This selection captures the essence of the album and is graced with touching melodies and ambiguous vocals.

Diana Bert - Tragedy Of The Uncommons will be out on cassette on Halloween. For more information please visit Big Cartel, Tumblr, Soundcloud and Discogs.

Matthew Bauer - "Night Demons"

The Brvtalist is pleased to present the upcoming LP by multi-disciplinary artist, Matthew Bauer. Night Demons is the perfect way to kick off this week in particular, and we are always fans of synthwave, dreamwave and related genres. Night Demons is the soundtrack to a slasher film never made and the whole album captures the film arch and essence of the genre perfectly. Bauer is a composer, artist and art director based in Los Angeles. He describes his music as a mixture of horror movies, French Touch, 80's synth pop and death metal. Here are a few words from the artist about the release:

Is he a man or is he a monster? By day he has a normal life with a normal job - but at night something strange is dwelling inside him. Every morning he awakens to gruesome thoughts seemingly implanted from nowhere. As the banal days drag on he can't help but wonder what happens when he goes to sleep at night. Morbid stories in the news begin to sound far too familiar. As time unravels so does he and the evidence becomes more and more tangled. Who is he really? Listen for yourself and see if you can decide...

We are proud to premiere one of our favorite tracks from the LP, "Cruise Control". Night Demons will be released on Halloween on So French Records. For more information please visit Facebook and Soundcloud.

Mace. - "Splendore Finanziario"

The Brvtalist is proud to premiere a new track by Italian mutant artist Mace.  Scenario "C" comes off the EP, "Splendore Finanziario", out November on Violet Poison's Veleno Viola label. This is an excellent release that re-interprets the 1980's sound through a paradigm of modern techno, ebm and industrial. All of the tracks have masterfully created a sense of tension and urgency which correlates directly to the theme of the record. The influences are clear while maintaining an original sound that can fit into many different categories. Scenario "C" is the third track on the release and we immediately loved its delicate balance of slowed, driving rhythms and dark, ruinous atmosphere. We asked Mace. to say a few words about the concept of the EP and he graciously provided us with the following (see below):

As economic complexity is boosting the financial industry, constantly increasing the demand for financial services, human perception of value changes and so do our reactions and our feelings. I asked myself whether nowadays we are witnessing a financialization of emotions.

Splendore Finanziario wants to reflect on the correlation between human nature and the financial system, considering the intensity and the way in which they're changing and giving a sonourous vision of their future developments. -Mace.

The EP will be released on pink vinyl with printed sleeve and will be available in November via Ready Made Distribution.

Dominatrix - Q&A with Luna Vassarotti

Very few works are capable of capturing the essence of their own time, while continuing to stay relevant long after they're produced. Dominatrix, the latest release by Berlin-based record label Instruments of Discipline ("IOD"), is definitely one of these works. Unearthed from 1980's New York City, Dominatrix is equal parts electro-punk, synthpop, proto-techno and dungeon soundtrack. Stuart Argabright is the man behind Dominatrix. For decades he has been a prolific producer in electronic music and his projects Ike Yard and Black Rain have been huge influences on countless other artists.  The track, "Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight", was a relative hit for Argabright and vocalist Dominque Davalos upon its release in 1984.  However, since the 80's little has been heard from the project until now. When we saw new material was being released by one of our favorite contemporary labels, we were interested in discovering more. We reached out to IOD label head, Luna Vassarotti, and she provided us with some great background and historical context. Please find the Q&A with Luna below.

The Brvtalist: Dominatrix is an unearthed gem from 1980's New York City. What drew you to the sound and aesthetic of this project? Also, is this unreleased material or a re-issue?

Luna Vassarotti: I’ve always been a fan of Ike Yard and Stuart Argabright’s more recent project, Black Rain. I was introduced to Stuart through TJ Cowgill from King Dude/Not Just Religious Music by email and I got to meet him in person at the Blackest Ever Black showcase in Berlin last year. We kept in touch and that’s when Stuart suggested un-released Dominatrix material for a release on my label. I fell in love with the tracks on the spot; they had an interesting mix of something timeless but also portrayed the danceable, synth-pop, club sound that I imagine you would hear in NY clubs in the mid 80’s. I still feel like the record’s sound is hard to categorize but that’s the reason I was drawn to it for an IOD release.

TB: I love the cover art! I especially like when labels take older material and reinvigorate it with new artwork and design. Talk about the idea for the cover and what you wanted to do with it.

LV: Thank you! Stuart gave me carte blanche for the cover, which I felt very honored by.  The idea first came through talking about how the Dominatrix project was born. The story, which is also explained in the release bio, began when a young Stuart met a beautiful, mysterious older woman in a corvette while hitchhiking in the States. They became friends and spent many nights together at her East Side apartment, getting high and listening to Bowie records. After he noticed the bull whips and manacles hanging in her closet, it became apparent that his friend’s occupation was chaining, whipping, and torturing upscale Manhattan businessmen - who were very willing victims and had the credit card bills to prove it. This project came to life because of his sincere admiration and respect for the professional dominatrix. From there it was evident to me that the Dominatrix had to be the main focus for the cover. I wanted something sexy but at the same time austere - a contrast between hard and soft, pleasure and pain, etc. Milk came to my mind as a playful contrast with the leather whip and gloves. It created a surreal environment which I think embodies the qualities of the music I was drawn to. I was lucky to have my boyfriend help me with the shots as he’s an amazing photographer.

TB: Instruments of Discipline is a great boutique label with a varied sound. How do you approach looking for artists to release and is there an underlying theme or concept with what you put out?

LV: I get quite a few demos by mail and I tend to go for the ones I like regardless of genre. I really started the label when I moved to Berlin and it has been an amazing source of inspiration. I’ve seen so many great shows and I get introduced to so much interesting work here. I have always travelled and I love meeting people so I still get recommendations from all over the place but I just follow and trust my own personal taste. It can be pretty eclectic, but I think this is how one creates something with a sense of their own character. The label is still very young and I don’t really think there is an underlying theme or concept. I believe I started with an ideal in mind but then found I was drawn to releasing things which didn’t exactly fit that mold, so rather than let a concept stop me it has evolved. That said, the label will always tend toward an obscure, darker aesthetic of sound.  I have always been attracted to a playful kind of violence and perhaps the idea of an apocalyptic fairytale.

Lunar Lodge // Mai Mai Mai (Instruments of Discipline, 2014)

TB: What's next from Instruments of Discipline?

LV:  I am releasing an album called Black Box Recordings, which is a collaboration between artist Robert Skrzyński (Micromelancolie) and Mike Bjella (GOG). I'm also co-releasing Elisabeth Dixon’s debut EP with Australian label Trait Records and both should be out by the end of the year. A Dominatrix remix album is also in the works. Finally, there is a special surprise release that must remain a secret until next year. I can only say that it’s a re-release of a NY act that was only ever out on tape. It will be a co-released with the great Berlin label [Aufnahme & Wiedergabe].

We would like to thank Luna Vassarotti for her time and great responses. Instruments of Discipline is a label we immediately identified with as it maintains a very good sense of cohesiveness while not adhering to a strict set of rules or boundaries. We also love art and music that is not easily categorized and IOD releases are always interesting and unique. We look forward to hearing more from Luna and her great label. For more information and to purchase Dominatrix please visit Instruments of Discipline.

Passing - "Distance"

The Brvtalist is proud to premiere the debut track by Los Angeles-based Passing. Comprised of Christopher Myrick (Bestial Mouths) and Blair Minor (Make U Hot),  Passing combines elements of minimal synth, post-punk and ebm to create a wonderfully dark, cutting sound that can still find its home on the dance floor. The duo's bass heavy, distorted beats are influenced by British Murder Boys, Fad Gadget, The Hacker, Silent Servant, In Trance 95 and the spaces in between.  Using analog hardware and chaotic sampling, Myrick's vocals are occasionally audible. A debut EP is planned for release in Winter 2015 and US and European tour dates will follow.  We are honored to bring you their first track, "Distance", and look forward to hearing more material.

New Brvtalism No. 031

A blackened soul leaves you numb. Pain becomes your pleasure and you yearn for the dead of night. You now serve a new master.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix by California-based Tuxedo Gleam. Mixing elements of cold, dark and synth wave, Tuxedo Gleam crafts beautifully seductive tracks that submerge the listener into a dark state of equal parts gloom and glamour. The project is driven by the synthesizer stylings of Aunt Gleam and the moment we heard the 2013's "Darkened Corners", we were hooked. That lead to other releases including one of our favorite tracks of the year, "Object of Desire", out on Brvtalist favorite Lentonia. New material is due out by the end of year and live shows will follow. In the meantime, please enjoy this incredible mix which showcases the project's DNA as well as some our of favorite contemporary synth acts.  We have also included the video for "Penetrate", which is an intense psychic journey directed and shot by Sonny Frisco.

For more Tuxedo Gleam please visit Soundcloud, Bandcamp and Facebook.

Hørd - EP #2 Remixes

The Brvtalist is proud to premiere four new remixes from the latest EP by French dark wave project Hørd.  Founded in 2013 by musician and video-artist Sebastien Carl in Bordeaux, Hørd masterfully combines elements of synth wave and complex melancholia in a package that invokes dark, sinister environments and lustful rhythms.

Out on October 15th (7" vinyl + digital format) on French labels Stellar Kinematics, Ol' Dirty Dancin and Anywave, EP #2 contains the stellar tracks "Speak" and "Let Them Burn".  The four remixes are bonus tracks by excellent producers Black Bug, Hante, AVGVST and Volcan. Each remix brings a distinct touch that ranges from Black Bug's ominous anthem to Hante's synth-driven dance floor banger, Volcan's electro-tinged offering and AVGVST's slow burning ritual.  We love the original material and these versions only add to the stellar release.  We asked Hørd for some comments on the EP and he graciously responded with these insightful remarks:

This release is very important for me because it's my first vinyl release, and also the first time I have collaborated with these labels, which were very implied in all the levels of the record.
These tracks reflect both aspects of my music - one could be described as "very cold pop", with lyrics, melody, chorus etc. And the other one, instrumental, more narrative, and more focused on sounds.

About the remixes: I am very proud to have such great remixers for my EP, I know all of them personally and they are all involved in personal and solo projects as well, which makes sense to me. I also have particular affinities with their projects and their music. It's been really interesting to communicate with each other, about their remixes, and my original tracks, as we did for the EP #2.

For your listening pleasure, please find all four remixes streaming below:

Thank you to Aurel from Anywave for assistance with this feature and we can't wait for the vinyl to be released.  For purchasing please visit:

Blitzkrieg Baby - "There Will Be Casualties"

Now listening at Brvtalist HQ - the new EP by Norwegian industrial pop act Blitzkrieg Baby.  Out now on the always impressive Beläten, "Cannibal Commando" is a five track single side cassette release that is filled with Blitzkrieg's signature mark of twisted, post-apocalyptic industrial mayhem. Channeling some of the ugliest aspects of humanity, the material is a darker, more complex follow up to the group's "Kid's World" EP, also released by Beläten.  The Brvtalist is always interested in completely transforming the pop paradigm and we love how Blitzkrieg's work pushes the boundaries of industrial, noise, and yes, even pop further and further. We picked one of our favorite tracks from the release for your listening pleasure.

Please visit Beläten and Facebook for more information and purchasing.
