Dhakira - La Possibilité D'un Après (Etang Brulant)

In response to the current events, experimental and ambient music label Etang Brulant made a public call to all artists who were interested to express their thoughts and feelings regarding the Covid-19 crisis. The goal behind this project is to donate all the collected money to Les Secours Populaire, a French charity fighting against poverty and exclusion.

Etang Brulant is a French Lebanese music label founded in 2018 by Lea Maria Moussali and Victor Pasqual. Initially they imagined an album of nineteen tracks by nineteen artists or groups from around the globe, but due to a huge number of propositions, the compilation was divided in to two parts of fifteen tracks each. One entitled Live Today and the other, Die Tomorrow.

For this occasion, we focus on the twelfth track of the album compilation by Dhakira, entitled “La possibilité d’un après” and the process of creation behind this piece. Dhakira is a multidisciplinary project composed of Sinan Varis and Amalia Jaulin, which focuses on themes such as memory, fragmentation and thinking patterns.

As we exchanged with Amalia (set and graphic designer), she explained that the pattern of this track was created based on her observations from the moment lockdown was announced and what it has led to until now. She broke down the events into several phases and schematized on paper her perception of the sound patterns they would deliver.

The first phase deals with the state of shock, the outburst of the news regarding the impact of the virus and Its chaotic consequences. Comes then the second phase which is manifested through a slowing-down with people staying home and putting on standby the hectic lives they are living, a form of respiration. Nevertheless, feelings of worry and tension build up to the next phase which is one of realization. This last phase obliges one to accept the idea that if humanity wants to survive, spiritual and natural lifestyles will have to be adopted.

With the given insight, the words ‘immersion of the listener’ are ones that come to mind and very well sum up the result the duo aims at reaching throughout their creations.

Based on this sound map, Sinan delivered his interpretation of Amalia’s vision thanks to his skills in sound design and Ableton, field recordings of the nature surrounding him during his confinement and very interestingly, the integration of voice recordings. The duo invited anyone who had the desire to record themselves and express their feelings regarding this epidemic. They asked people to speak in the language they wished in order to put an emphasis on the cruel fact that what we are undergoing is worldwide.

Dhakira gives a lot of importance to the “organic” dimension in the process of creation. One of the testimonies they had received dealt with a few hesitations but regardless of this “defect” if I may say, they chose to leave it as it is, consequently delivering a very honest and realistic output which grabs the listener. Through this process they succeed at conveying a story in the most immersive and possible manner in order to avoid binary outputs. This leads me to my last point: the chainsaw.

When they had finished the track, or had at least thought so, the following question occurred to them: “why should we end this beautifully?”. By challenging aesthetic and moral certainties, they expose the possibility of a disaster. The troubling feature of the chainsaw in the outro is the materialization of a door which could open, and which is more likely to open than one filled with hope. “La Possibilité d’un Après” is a retrospective of these past few weeks as well as the demonstration of a future that we hope to avoid.

If a full body and mind immersion is what you are looking for, this track and compilation is worthy of attention!

The Brvtalist Premieres: Hystérie - Chaos (Area Z)

French Synth-punk band Hystérie presents their first EP on Area Z after two releases on Parisian label ‘Le Turc Mécanique’. The 3 members of the band offer an engaging and personal material, whether in the lyrics or in their musical composition. Previously described as ‘Cold-Industrial’ they continue to deliver and develop their unique sound, reinforced by the lyrics sang in French. The lyrics have a strong take on freedom and social liberties, addressing the current social issues in France and more generally happening worldwide such as police abuses and the loss of democratic rights. In this present work the band members personally engage themselves through a reflection about loss; whether it’s about dogma, illusions, hopes or reference points. It is about loss, in all its meanings and how to keep going from then.

The track “Chaos” says it all. During the chorus, the sentence “Le Chaos règne”, meaning “Chaos rules” is repeated over and over again. The rattling guitar lines express this overwhelming chaos which seems to be all there is left. “Le Temps est venu, de faire ton Deuil”, which means “Now your time has come to mourn” is the last sentence sang in the track that wraps up the EP. It leaves the listener a lot to reflect upon. Despite the heavy and dark input that this song deals with, the final impression is uplifting and strength giving!

New Brvtalism No. 226 - Charly Schaller

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Charly Schaller. Born in Munich Germany, Schaller discovered her passion for techno during her gap year when she was first exposed to it as a raver in Berlin’s Techno clubs. After moving to England to study at the University of Cambridge, she developed her penchant for diverse sub-genres of techno music after being exposed to an ambit of musical cultures in the UK.

Upon finishing her studies in Philosophy, Charly relocated to Berlin and began Djing in various clubs and venues across Berlin and Germany, including: About Blank, Grießmühle, and Arena Club.

Since her debut, Charly’s DJ repertoire has embraced an eclectic musical collection that allows the audience to explore a truly personalised sensorial experience. Boasting a passion for tracks with vocals, as well as Rave, percussion heavy bangers, and dramatic synth lines, Charly merges divergent musical styles in her DJ sets as a unique signature; one that inspires the audience to be fully immersed in the euphoric experience that only music can inspire.

Charly is currently a promoter and resident at Edge Detection (at PAL/About Blank) and Strictly Forbidden (at Maze). More recently she has been picked up by Alan Fitzpatricks “We Are The Brave” label and will be releasing on their “Electric Soul” compilation in June, alongside playing various shows for the brand. We are thrilled to have her contribute to our series with this explosive mix of techno, acid, rave and more, showcasing her diverse sound.

S S S S - ABSCISSUS (Orden)

Booking agency and clothing brand, Orden, launches its first release, Excess of Signs and Meaning by Swiss musician/producer, S S S S.

Excess is the tenth release by Samuel Savenberg who is also known for his work in Die Selektion and Dillon. The record contains four tracks loosely based on material he has been using for his more club-oriented live sets in recent times. The EP contains heavy yet playfully arranged rhythmic patterns accompanied by several variations of Industrial elements.

The title Excess of Signs and Meaning can be seen as a comment on how nowadays Music and Popular culture tries to load itself with Semiotics and Statements seemingly in fear of losing importance.

The Brvtalist is delighted to premiere “Abscissus”, a word which takes its roots from Latin “abscissa” which means to cut off, or to separate.

This second track reflects upon this loss of meaning and loss of understanding about what is important and what is not. This confusion is very well represented through the irregular and deconstructed, or even fragmented patterns we hear at the beginning. So, one can wonder: if everything means something, nothing means anything.

Out April 17th on digital format. Get yours now at: https://orden.bandcamp.com/
