New Brvtalism No. 218 - Heidi Sabertooth

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Heidi Sabertooth. Since 2012, the New York City-based singer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer has cemented herself in the city’s community and beyond and has become known for her live hardware performances and vinyl heavy DJ sets. Her unique brand of electronics focuses on gritty drum loops, vintage acid and unruly sounds. Her entry to our series perfectly showcases this as she moves from raw industrial, pulse pounding techno and infectious experimentations.

With standout release on labels like Lobster Theramin, Lost Soul Enterprises, New York Haunted and more, Sabertooth starts the new decade with a huge EP on Ellen Alien’s UFO imprint. With The Void is four tracks of fast, improv techno that showcases the artist’s love for vintage hardware. Playing her machines like instruments, Sabertooth unleashes floor destroyers that are ready for this world or any other. Pick this one one up now on 12” and digital at: http://heidisabertooth.bandcamp.com/album/with-the-void

LaFontaine - "Dehumanized" + Q&A

The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere a track from Icelandic producer LaFontaine. "Dehumanized" is the title track off the forthcoming EP on Planet X. As the name implies, the EP examines modern day slavery in all of its forms and seeks to offer an answer to break these chains. The result is three original tracks and a stellar remix from Matrixxman which explode onto the scene and take the genre to other planetary systems. Ahead of the release on February 20th, we spoke with the producer about the EP’s concept, background and more (see below).

The EP is out on February 20th and you can pick it up on Bandcamp.

The Brvtalist: Dehumanized is the title of the new EP and your goal is to help break the chains of human slavery. Talk a bit more about the concept and your approach to making the tracks.

LaFontaine: All humans are slaves in today's world on some level. If it’s people who are hooked on social media, addicted to eating bad food, smoking, using drugs or something even more subtle that we don’t realize. I want to break that kind of slavery. The tracks are about what their title is... Getting transported to space to escape this dystopian world we live in and enter a utopian one and being dehumanized to get rid of our old ways and then party hard to Xymbals (pronounced cymbals).

TB: Tell us about where you grew up, your surroundings and how that affects your music.

L: Growing up in Iceland, most musicians always talk about how the Icelandic nature affects them and how they make music, I don’t think it works like that for me, maybe in my subconscious but I’m definitely not aware of it. I’ve always thought that hearing new music from friends and other artists i like affects and inspires me the most.

TB: Talk about Matrixxman's involvement in the EP and his remix/take on the title track.

L: Me, Exos and Matrixxman were playing together at this place in Iceland in 2018, soon after the place closed down we were outside talking about my EP after Exos showed him the tracks and the next thing I know he’s done a remix of the title track. I don’t really remember how it all went down because it just happened. He’s just a great dude and I’m super glad that he’s been supporting my music.

TB: Do you think the future holds a greater amount of human slavery?

L: Yes and no, I think a lot of people are aware about what goes on in our world today but they don’t do anything about it except for complaining on Facebook. Act up, support any aid you feel is important, help others and be kind. People need to forget about all this extra shit and care more about basic human kindness.

TB: What's coming up next for you?

L: Now I want to keep on releasing and playing more music, be more active in the studio and focus on the now, on being healthy and kind. Go and support Planet X, buy my EP... it’s insane.

Thanks to LaFontaine and Planet X.

Outside Fashion: Fashion Photography From The Studio To Exotic Lands (1900-1969)

Thinking about the changes in fashion, photography, culture and beyond from the turn of the century through the late 1960’s is almost difficult to wrap your mind around. Two world wars, major technological advances and the birth of the modern fashion industry are just a few societal touchstones to consider. This is why, Outside Fashion: Fashion Photography From The Studio To Exotic Lands (1900-1969), is so fascinating to look at. On view now at Amsterdam’s Huis Marseille photography museum, Outside Fashion represents an incredible timeline of cultural trends, social conditions and much more from across six dynamic decades. Whether a studio shoot from 1910 to a stunning South American location in the 60’s, the exhibition brilliantly looks at everything from tourism, beauty, ready to wear fashion and photography itself. Looking at these photographs will undoubtedly transport you to the time and you can see the evolution of one of art’s most vital mediums.

On view now through March 8, 2020. For more visit: https://huismarseille.nl/en/

From the museum:

A unique Parisian fashion archive comes to Amsterdam

At Huis Marseille’s invitation, a selection of vintage fashion photography from the Palais Galliera Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris will be shown in Amsterdam in the winter of 2019. The exhibition will display unique photographs and magazines that are normally kept deep in the archives of the French fashion institute. The selection was made by Sylvie Lécallier, Head of the photography collection at Palais Galliera. The historical development of fashion photography, from studio settings to outdoor shoots, is a story of emancipation and liberation, both in visual and geographical terms. The exhibition shows how over the years women’s bodies gained increasing freedom – starting from static poses, shrouded in long gowns, and moving to sports activities, sunbathing, or simply laughing and walking down the street. Over the same period photography moved from black and white to colour, and the range of places where these photographs were made expanded enormously due to the advent of worldwide tourism.

Sonic Resistance: A Compilation For Rojava

Out today: musical interference against the imperialist war machinery, against capitalism and campaigning to raise awareness about the struggle of the Kurdish freedom movement. Sonic Resistance is a 90 track (!) compilation put together to support the feminist movement in the autonomous area of Northern Syria. All proceeds from the digital sales will be sent directly to the ‘Foundation of the Free Woman in Rojava‘ (Weqfa Jina Azad A Rojava) which is one of the last women’s organization in the area.

The Brvtalist has been a big supporter of Oramics and the Polish organization teamed up with Zurich’s Kashev Tapes to bring us this great act of solidarity and a beautiful show of support for the women of Rojava. More from the label:

Rojava established itself not only in opposition to the Turkish military regime, but also as a grassroots movement redefining the future of the region on its own terms. The Kurdish resistance is advocating for women’s equality, LGBTQIA rights, ecology, sustainability, and democratic confederalism. It has created its own strategies outside western political pressure. The Turkish invasion is not only destroying lives, but also extinguishes any hope for substantial change. The attacking army has superior technology and simply “more of everything” to suppress the revolution in the cruelest manner. We stand with the resistance in northern Syria and the people who defend their autonomy.

In the wake of being opposed to such an absolute violence, we asked ourselves what can we do to support this struggle? How can we engage our community and our skills to defend Rojava? We feel obliged to point out and continue the emancipating history of club music and how it has been connected to equality and freedom movements since the beginning. With the compilation we spread the idea of Rojava through our networks and on the other hand we try to redistribute resources. Although we choose to make music, sometimes very loud and noisy, we can never cease to listen and learn. The revolution in Rojava shows us how deeply entangled we are in postcolonial relations and motivates us to deconstruct existing conditions and structures. That’s how we understand being an ally.

Because the war against equality and freedom is a war against all of us.
