Demdike Stare return to the lab with two extended new productions, inaugurating a series of untamed releases brought together under the Testpressing banner. ‘Collision’ was recorded in late 2012 and is pretty much unlike anything you’ll have heard from Demdike before, an intense high-frequency re-arrangement of Jungle and Noise, like a more brutal variant of the Demdike-affiliated HATE project, fed through a bank of analogue boxes and pedals, left to spin uncontrollably for 10 minutes before fading to black. ‘Misappropriation’ on the flip feeds off a different noise altogether, perched precariously between the mangled percussion you’d most commonly associate with Muslimgauze and the metallic clank of industry, a proper sunstroke riddim: angry and unforgiving.

Available for pre-order via Mount Analog.

Woke up this morning and fell down the rabbit hole going through some awesome videos on the Dark Entries Records YouTube page. This jam from Q4U, an Icelandic band which formed in the early 80’s, stood out.

Q4U began with a stylish, aggressive punk image before experimenting with drum machines and synthesizers, which almost nobody did in Reykjavík at the time. The later sound had gothic leanings, often compared with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Xmal Deutschland. Their body of work is united by the powerful vocals of Ellý, who mostly sings in Icelandic about controversial, political experiences, much like Ari Up of The Slits.

Check out the Q1 Deluxe Edition 1980-1983 LP released on Dark Entries Records.

A Facebook page has emerged with photos of Cambiare, a new bar in Toyko’s “Golden Gai” district in Shinjuku, which is inspired by Dario Argento’s classic, “Suspiria.”

From what we can see, it looks like they have a lot of the elements there - the stained glass, floral wall paper, Argento style lighting, and the abstract floors. Well done!

R.I.P. Martin Lloyd

Martin Lloyd, one half of 80’s electronic pioneers Oppenheimer Analysis, passed away in April of liver failure, he was 63. Lloyd, with his band mate Andy Oppenheimer, formed Oppenheimer Analysis in the early 80’s and went on to release highly influential material such as 1982’s “New Mexico”.

The duo recently reunited and perennial favorite Minimal Wave has released some of their earlier work. He was truly prolific and will be missed.

PANDEMONIA

Pandemonia is a very tall, very plastic, very ironic piece of art. Covered head-to-toe in Latex, the shiny beauty queen is the epitome of a public obsession with surfaces. - iD

Pandemonia began publicly displaying her work over 4 years ago, appearing front row at fashion shows and at high profile events.

Pandemonia with Jerry Hall.

Pandemonia and Pam Hogg.

Pandemonia describes herself as “packaging artificiality and lack of content”, in the same way perhaps as Warhol’s Campbell Soup cans. Both are indicative of a consumerist society, both are icons of modern art and advocates of the Pop genre. -iD

We can’t get enough! Discover more Panadmonia on her blog:

"Gate to Hell" Discovered in Turkey

A group of Italian archaeologists have uncovered what is known in Greco-Roman mythology as the “Gate to Hell” in Southwest Turkey. Known primarily as “Pluto’s Gate”, this site was considered the portal to the underworld.

The mysterious opening was filled with lethal vapors so dense that any animal who entered would die instantly. Also uncovered was an amazing site of ruins which include Ionic columns and an inscription with a dedication to the deities of the underworld — Pluto and Kore.

According to lore, small birds were given to pilgrims to test the deadly capabilities of the cave and hallucinated priests would sacrifice bulls to Pluto.

Definitely a fascinating discovery and a good addition to your global tour of ancient wonders.

More info at Discovery.
