A group of Italian archaeologists have uncovered what is known in Greco-Roman mythology as the “Gate to Hell” in Southwest Turkey. Known primarily as “Pluto’s Gate”, this site was considered the portal to the underworld.
The mysterious opening was filled with lethal vapors so dense that any animal who entered would die instantly. Also uncovered was an amazing site of ruins which include Ionic columns and an inscription with a dedication to the deities of the underworld — Pluto and Kore.
According to lore, small birds were given to pilgrims to test the deadly capabilities of the cave and hallucinated priests would sacrifice bulls to Pluto.
Definitely a fascinating discovery and a good addition to your global tour of ancient wonders.
