The Brvtalist is proud to present a special edition mix by Wisdom Tits in collaboration with Berlin's Krake Festival. Ahead of this year's fest taking place in Berlin from June 18th - June 23rd, we bring you two promo mixes + interviews from two acts playing the festival. Today, we're excited to host this stellar one from Berlin based duo, Wisdom Tits. Comprised of Caillou, French-German DJ, curator and one half of MILK ME and Paty Vapor, Brazilian DJ, curator, part of Wrong Era, Slow Motion Records, and resident at the Berlin based club Sameheads, together they run their party series focused on highlighting Minimal Synth, Synthpunk, Post Punk and No Wave female & queer acts. Their research is focused on dark electronics and old-school sounds with an avant-garde touch. A blend of unique drums, powerful basslines, synthetic melodies and immersive vocals, connecting the past with the future. Shifting constantly between low and high BPM, they infect the dance floor with their selections. Catch Wisdom Tits at the Krake Weekender at About Blank and read our interview with the pair below.
The Brvtalist: Let's start at the beginning - tell us about the formation of wisdom tits and theinception of the name.
Wisdom Tits: We met in 2022 at Urban Spree. Paty was playing there for the Slow Motion Records takeover, and Catherine, one of the former bookers of the venue, was also DJing regularly. We instantly connected over our love for each other's music selection, discovering that we have complimentary tastes. We both enjoy bringing non-functional tracks to thdance floor, infused with a wave synthpunk obscure touch.
Names are always really hard to find and satisfying. I (Catherine) was trying to think about a word play with the body parts, and somehow I thought about “wisdom tooth” and thought let’s change it into “wisdom tits”, it was basically a joke that we decided to keep. People always laugh when we introduce ourselves and it seems that it helps to break the ice.
TB: How would you describe your sound?
WT: We focus on dark electronics and old school sounds with an avant-garde touch. It's hard to put ourselves in one box since we both appreciate a wide range of genres and deeply respect the history and stories each one can tell.
TB: As a female duo, do you think there's more opportunities in the scene nowadays or has it not changed that much?
WT: Well… if we compare nowadays to a decade ago, we would say yes, there is a change. It’s still way far from being perfect and reaching the equality we ask for but we are positive about the future and what the new generations are bringing.
TB: As a Berlin based duo, what are your thoughts about Berlin at the moment?
WT: For me (Paty), it’s a real moment of change, things are getting harder for independenparties and venues especially on the financial side, it’s just really hard to afford projects at the moment if you don’t have a residence in a big club, fundings or sponsors. It makes it difficult to keep things fresh especially for more niche groups. I moved here in 2016 and I can notice that after the pandemic it never got back to what it was before, many places couldn’t survive that. However, I still believe we will be able to reinvent ourselves. Many places are dying but I also know there are a lot of new locations to bopen, and we definitely should work as a collective if we want to save the club culture here
I (Catherine) have similar thoughts about the scene in Berlin, I remember moving here and being able to see a few live shows a night, because it was pretty cheap. Nowadays, I think that the access to culture in Berlin, and not just in Berlin, gets harder and more expensive. I think that access to live and club music should be affordable for everyone, which is currently not the case, it’s a difficult time for promoters, venues and the audience as literally everything is getting more and more expensive.
TB: What can we expect at Krake Festival?
High energy, genre fluid selection and much fun! We are very delighted to be DJing at Krake this year, it’s definitely the space to push boundaries and embrace he unexpected.
TB: What's coming up next and anything else you're excited about?
WT: Apart from Krake, which we can't wait for, we'll be playing at the Ombra Festival in Barcelona this December. We love the curation of the festival, so we are honored and excited to be part of the line up this year. We also have a few mixes in the works and more editions of our night series, which focuses on highlighting wave/synthpunk/minimal synth female and queer acts.
