Per Najbjerg Odderskov: Tell us about the background and mission of the label:
Luke Holland: In the beginning, Trapdoor Tapes started out as a means to release our own music and ten years later, it's essentially the same although broader in it's catalogue. I must have been doing something right because as the label gets older, I get more expressions of interest from not only Australians, but people working abroad because they liked the aesthetic we stand by and the integrity of the releases. Over the years I was able to work with important artists such as Unique Oil Free Air, Rope Society , Sick Llama, Vomir, Sindre Bjerga, Mshing, Word Of Life Church SS, Dead Body Collection, Ebola Disco, Military Position, Praetorian Guard, German Army, Andrew Coltrane and the list goes on. The list of artists seems to be growing all the time.
The future of trapdoor and the artists we work with reflects a fairly desolate and uncompromising view of our existence within this society and our planet. This may be apparent aesthetically when you pick up one of our releases. Whilst the populace walks around dumb, numb and senseless obediently serving Trapdoor stands for disassociating this empty headedness.
PNO: What was the prime inspiration for starting Trapdoor Tapes?
LH: When Trapdoor started out in 2005, two friends formed it and we used it to promote our own releases and activities. Our first few releases delved mainly into bleak and harsh electronics. Once the label grew so did the varying sounds of our artists.
Aesthetically when you looked at a Trapdoor Tape we wanted you to know it was just that. In retrospect I was far more influenced by early tape culture and labels that released some of my favourite artists - such as Terse Tapes, Zero Cabal Extreme, ZFS etc
PNO: What's next for the label?
LH: Forthcoming releases by Armour Group, And the familiar Word Of Life Church SS, Military Position, Thirdorgan, The School For Cadavers(Members ofLast Dominion Lost, K2, Blitzkrieg Baby, Sentenced For Life, Mshing, and others yet to be announced to the public.
Now Available on Trapdoor: Word Of Life Church SS - Ceremony Of Life & Death C30, Mshing / Sentenced For Life Split C30. Coming soon in late January: Prognostic Circle C46.
