The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere the new single and video form Zachery Allan Starkey. The New York City-based artist reveals “No Security”, our first look at his upcoming solo album, Fear City. A statement on the current global political landscape, “No Security” is a sonic hardware assault, capturing the paranoia and instability of the current era while casting an infectious spell over the dance floor. The video is directed by longtime Starkey collaborator William Murray and builds off the track’s urgent tone by fusing elements of cyber-warfare, riots and the ever-peering eyes of those who sow unrest amongst what is mainly an ignorant population. The video is the perfect visual accompaniment to the track and we were instantly lured into its timely chaos.
Fear City takes its title from a 1970’s nickname for New York City and is set to be released early this year. It is rooted in New York’s decadent nightlife, drugs, sex, darkness, class inequality and the opioid epidemic. The record is firmly about the present and looking towards an increasingly dystopian future. The depth of Starkey’s vision and songwriting for this project has resulted in new musical contributions from Bernard Sumner, the leader of pioneering electronic band New Order, and founding member of Joy Division. Inspired by Starkey's songwriting, Sumner provides synthesizers, guitars, drum programming, and additional production on two key Starkey songs, the anthemic club track "Force", and the darkly powerful title track, "Fear City". Both are set to be released as singles early in the year. Starkey also opened for New Order on their sold out Music Complete Tour. From the artist:
In 2013, I wrote a song called "We're All Fucked!", which predicted the rise of conservative populist Donald Trump as a direct result of the media's refusal to discuss the failure of economic revival, both domestic and international. In 2015, I wrote a song called HARD POWER, about a Trump like autocrat taking over the US government and bombing the Middle East unprovoked, in the name of "democracy". The past few years have seen both of my predictions have been proved correct. Now, at the dawn of 2020, we enter into the age of NO SECURITY. For the majority of people worldwide, there is no economic security, no political security, no financial security, no personal security, no climate security, as right wing governments, including the Trump Administration, escalate global conflict on every level. Here in New York City, the streets are rife with daily chaos, anger, and strife, as our infrastructure falls apart and socio-economic inequality rises to a breaking point. In new my single NO SECURITY, and in my forthcoming album FEAR CITY, I have attempted to put all of these frightening realities into music. The video I've made with William Murray, mostly pulled from current news broadcasts, attempts to do the same. There is no security
As an added bonus, today we are also thrilled to present a new concert video from Starkey titled HARD POWER - LIVE IN NYC. Beautifully and artfully filmed and edited by Ostin Torre, the film captures Starkey and his live band performing the entirety of his acclaimed 2017 album HARD POWER (the title track of which Starkey produced with Gavilan Rayna Russom of LCD Soundsystem), as well as Starkey's 2016 Deep House single “Come Inside”, and his heartbreaking 2013 club single, “Into the Sun”. Released under his ZGRT alias, Starkey composed and recorded the HARD POWER album himself, and then assembled a crack live band for the 2016-2019 Hard Power Tour. Starkey first promoted HARD POWER by opening for New Order on their Music Complete USA Tour, which was then followed by a long string of packed out club shows. Torre's film captures Starkey and his core live band, which includes core members Laura Holden (Synthesizer, Backing Vocals, Live Sequencing), Frank Piccirillo (Bass Guitar, Percussion) and Avi Jacob (Drums) as well as synthesist Niabi Aquena, better know as producer Searmanas, who was filling in for regular ZGRT synth player Genevieve Kimmel Morris (who was off on tour with Martin Bisi). There will also be an accompanying live album.
