New Brvtalism No. 230 - Myn + Q&A

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Myn. Perhaps the perfect ending to a week of raw, underground electronics, the French artist has become known throughout the world for his diverse sets which range from everything to electro, techno, acid, minimal synth, italo and beyond. Without falling into any genre categories, Myn has no limits to dance floors he destroys and with releases on Pinkman and his own Public Systems Recordings, his productions follow the same ethos.

We are thrilled to host this brvtal set from the artist and to mark the occasion we present an interview with the man himself where we discuss the pandemic, fatherhood and more. (see below)

The Brvtalist: You've been doing some heavy international touring the last couple years. How are you dealing with not being able to tour right now?

Myn: Yeah, it's a pretty heavy and sad situation for everyone. As in many countries who got hit hard by the virus, we’ve all been staying at home in France for 2 months. I don't think we will be able to work again soon, maybe until September or even longer if the virus is not under control. So this is how my days look at the moment... I'm recording some podcasts, taking care of my little nugget (my daughter), making music, watching series / documentaries and movies, I read, and trying to get a little exercise. Since I can't play soccer, I run 3 times per week to get my nice chubby body in good shape. I eat healthy without too much excess and stopped drinking alcohol during the pandemic situation so almost 2 months... but to be honest I look forward to having a good bottle or maybe few good bottles of natural wine with some friends whenever we will be able to see each other again. I'm lucky enough to live now in South of France in the dirty, beautiful city of Marseille. The sun knocks on your window everyday and there is the sea not so far from my home. So even if we’re stuck between 4 walls it's better to be here than a rainy city i believe. As far as traveling, I took a little break when my daughter was born, but i was ready to be back on the road a few months later. I had some cool tours scheduled, North America, Australia, and several gigs in Europe just as the period of covid 19 began. Let‘s see how it goes in the future.... right now we can not make any plans since we don't really know how it will go.

TB: As you announced earlier, you also have a new addition to your family. Has that changed/influenced anything on your creative side? It's also worth noting that your child won't remember a world before the pandemic.

M: I don't know yet if being a daddy changed or influenced something on my creative side, but one thing is for sure... like 100% sure.... having a baby changed my sleep schedule! Haha. Jokes aside, since I became a daddy I'm obviously always driven by the same passion, which is music, and being a father brought me a lot of happiness and will bring me lot of serenity in my work. About the little one, it’s crazy she’s spent half of her life so far in quarantine... I'm glad she's not aware about what's going on because it's a very strange entry into life...not a good story to tell before she goes to bed.

TB: What are some things you're looking forward to once this period has ended?

M: Oh many things. I look forward to returning to normal life even if it will be obviously quite different for several months maybe a year or so... I look forward to traveling, touring again, feeling the crowd in clubs, hanging out with friends, playing soccer, going to bars and restaurants, going to movies... I can’t wait to show my little one the normal life we had before this crazy situation and teach her many things and do some cool activities together... daddy duties! Summer is on the way so even if we’re not able to work for a long time it will be cool to hang out at the beach. My friend Richard who is the artist who just released on my label calls me the Dolphin man, so yeah, I love to swim a lot and jump from the cliffs and dive into the water! We have a beautiful natural reserve with huge fauna and flora and beautiful landscapes called Les Calanques here between Marseille and Cassis. Really cool spot to hike, swim, and do rock climbing. Everything is 2 steps from the sea, like, literally in front of the bright blue water. But before everything i mentioned, if I could I would like to bring my little family far from home, just to breathe fresh air and take a little trip all together.

TB: I always like the diversity of your sets. How do you think your sound has evolved since you started out as Myn?

M: In my opinion it's cool not to be stuck in one type of music. I like to be wild, I'm a music lover so I cannot be stuck in one kind of style. I don't wanna be confined to one genre of music, I’m too curious and I need to explore! But everything has to fit into the same vibe bubble if you know what I mean. My taste and my style evolved like many artists, and have matured with time I guess. I think I found my musical identity, and because i like diversity this musical identity can take many different shapes.

TB: What's coming up for Myn and/or Public System Recordings?

M: I'm working on a new EP. Since we’re locked at home I have more time to play with my toys. I also started 2 projects with friends one is with the next artist who released on my label, my brother from another mother Richard Gamble. We recorded some tracks while i was on tour in the USA last year in his stunning studio in Brooklyn, and then when he came to Europe last summer he stayed 1 week at my home in Marseille. Between two pastaga (pastis) we managed to record some stuff, and we’ve continued to work together by sharing recordings remotely since the quarantine zone began. I also recently started something with my friend Kluentah (half of the duo Fallbeil) who previously released an EP titled Muskelbein on my label, in addition to contributing tracks to a double 12” compilation as both Fallbeil and Kluentah. We just collaborated on some music for a French label/venue/promoter alongside many great artists, it will be out before the summer comes.

TB: Any other closing thoughts?

M: Just a big thank you for the invitation, big blessings to THE BRVTALIST and all the people worldwide who have been affected during the pandemic situation. It's hard for everyone but we will see the light again soon!

Thanks to Myn for the mix and speaking with us.
