The Brvtalist is proud to present an interview with Marcel Fengler. Known as one of the "finest techno DJs" in the scene, for over two decades the prolific artist has blazed new trails by becoming of the first residents of the legendary Berghain/Panorama Bar as well as releasing classics on his label IMF. Recently he started a new series titled HARDPROOF, which features some of today's most exciting up and coming talents. Ahead of the series second volume, we had the pleasure of speaking with the artist about the release, his direction, the label and more. Check it out below.
The Brvtalist: HARDPROOF is a new series from you. Tell us about how it was developed and how it’s different from other stuff on the label.
Marcel Fengler: The essence of the HARDPROOF concept stems from a flood of demos I received for my IMF label (Index Marcel Fengler) – tracks I was eager to release. However, my tight schedule for vinyl releases, coupled with lengthy delivery times, would have pushed these releases into late 2024. This wouldn't have been a sustainable path for the label, nor would it have shown respect to the artists. Hence, the idea was born to create a platform where I could independently release these tracks without vinyl limitations. Furthermore, I personally reached out to artists whose production work I find exceptionally captivating. As a result, every HARDPROOF release includes a few tracks from well-known acts, yet the primary focus remains on nurturing up-and-coming talent and expanding their reach to a broader audience.
TB: This is the second edition v/a of the series. Talk about what you wanted to do with this edition and some of the artists involved.
MF: The HARDPROOF concept distinguishes itself by embracing a variety of techno sub-genres. Consequently, each release boasts its own individual and cohesive style, while also spotlighting meticulously selected and 'hard-proven' techno tracks. This approach exemplifies the richness and diversity within the techno genre, showcasing its multifaceted nature. Moreover, it aligns with the concept of showcasing artists associated with the younger generation, highlighting the multifaceted nature of contemporary techno music. Avoiding one-dimensional techno is a paramount goal for me in this project.
I'm familiar with some of the artists featured in the second edition, such as Chontane and Introversion, as I've known them here in Berlin. I've been a big fan of their music for a while and have often included their tracks in my DJ sets. Ferdinger, Sigvard as well as the guys from ILL COMMUNICATION have also grabbed my attention with their recent productions, making them excellent additions to the compilation. I'm truly delighted to have each of them on board for this project. However, this sentiment extends to all the artists who are joining HARDPROOF as well.
TB: Would you say the Hardproof sound is your current direction as a producer and DJ as well?
MF: HARDPROOF is fundamentally centered on curating tracks that are tailor-made for the dancefloor. As a DJ, I relish the opportunity to play these selections because each edition encapsulates a unique techno sub-genre. This versatility aligns seamlessly with my DJing style, as I enjoy traversing a wide range of genres while performing. For me, techno is far more than a singular, one-dimensional sound or direction. It's a multifaceted genre, and I take great pleasure in exploring its diverse and dynamic dimensions.
On the production side, yeah, I follow a similar path when creating straightforward dancefloor-oriented tracks. However, it's actually a bit more intricate because I have a genuine fondness for crafting music that goes beyond just being dancefloor-focused. At times, I begin projects and let them evolve naturally, resulting in tracks that are sometimes more experimental, slower-paced, cinematic, or even purely ambient in nature.
TB: With over a decade running IMF, what are some things you still like about running the label and somethings you don’t.
MF: Overseeing IMF for over a decade has been a fulfilling experience. What continues to resonate with me is the creative control over the label's musical direction, the opportunity to curate diverse releases, and the joy of unearthing emerging talents. Sharing groundbreaking music remains a highlight of my role. On the flip side, there are aspects that present challenges. Adapting to the ever-shifting music industry landscape, managing the intricacies of digital distribution, and handling administrative tasks can be demanding and time-intensive. Nonetheless, the gratification of contributing to the techno scene, promoting exceptional artists, and shaping the label's identity keeps me enthusiastic about IMF's journey, making the rewards far outweigh the challenges.
TB: What can we expect next on the label and anything else you’re excited about coming up.
MF: In the pipeline at IMF, there's a wealth of exciting new content on the horizon. One major change is the evolving concept behind our EPs. In recent years, I've observed a growing division in techno, a perceived rift between the old and the new. Personally, I don't favor this trend, as I believe these elements are inherently intertwined and shouldn't be pitted against each other. To bridge this gap, future releases by exceptionally talented producers will feature remixes from established artists, fostering a more cohesive musical narrative.
As previously mentioned, you can anticipate a new EP from me in October, featuring an outstanding remix by SHDW & Obscure Shape. Additionally, we have a formidable release from Rove Ranger with remarkable remixes by The Advent, along with Rodiaz's release, featuring an impressive remix by Slam, and much more in the works. Additionally, the first release from STEYA is in the works, which I am also very excited about. Moreover, I have been working on my second solo album for quite some time, which will also be released on IMF.
And last but not least, I’ll be launching a new event series by the name #hardproven. This concept combines the finest elements from former IMF showcases, ‘Marcel Fengler Invites’ events and the HARDPROOF VA project, ushering in a captivating new chapter for music enthusiastds. So there is a lot happening soon, and I'm really looking forward to it.
HARDPROOF VA 02 is out now. Pick yours up on Bandcamp.
