The Brvtalist is pleased to present the new collection from Katie Gallagher. One of our favorite designers delivers another stunning collection for F/W ‘21 with Ocean Grey . The garments are elegant, sophisticated but still carry Gallagher’s brilliant sense of subculture and penchant for the dark. I love also love the introduction of the “Ocean Grey” color and model Genesis Webb is the perfect fit for the collection.
I’ve been talking with Katie for around 6 years now, with our first interview taking place in 2015 (read HERE)! I’ve always admired her independent spirit and her runway shows at NYFW also rank among my favorite. When she sent this collection over I thought it was another great opportunity to talk fashion during the pandemic, the new collection and the changes we’re seeing throughout the industry. See our conversation below.

Kattie Gallagher - F/W ‘21 “Ocean Grey”.
The Brvtalist: Your collections always have great themes or concepts. Tell us a little bit about "Ocean Grey" and any inspirations behind it.
Katie Gallagher: Thanks! I titled the latest FW21 collection, "Ocean Grey" to describe the dismal atmosphere of Venice Beach while living here and designing here. It has gotten especially grim here during the pandemic. I used a grey velvet fabric for many pieces this season. It takes on deep blue or purple hues depending on the light or the way the fabric folds and moves with the body.
TB: How has the pandemic been for you creatively?
KG: I have done a lot of work during the pandemic. I've been extremely isolated, but I sort of like it. I have been stuck in an okay place to be during a pandemic, by the ocean, the outdoors and lots of space.
TB: Last time we spoke you had just moved to Los Angeles. Now that you've lived there for a bit, what do you think?
KG: I hate it. Haha! (Venice at least.) I actually haven't been able to fully experience much of LA, or at least most of it outside of the West side due to the pandemic, work, and simply just being so far from everything out here. I'm pleased to say, I am moving away in a couple months.
TB: The brand has been involved with NYFW for a long time and staged some of my favorite runways shows. What's it like not having the traditional fashion week/calendar? Do you think we still even need them?
KG: Thank you! I used to love putting on my shows. I would always say it was my favorite two days out of the year (one in September-Spring/Summer and one in February-Fall/Winter.) However, I believe it's over. I don't think the industry needs it. I think it's antiquated-like many aspects of the fashion industry, to stick to the traditional calendar, hard dates and so on. It's wasteful and expensive to say the least.
TB: What's coming up next and anything else you want to mention.
KG: Our move! Where we are going is actually not settled yet... hopefully lots of orders which don't come in while my machines are loading onto a truck :) And then of course, the beginning stages of my upcoming Spring/Summer 2022 collection.
