The track comes off as part of the debut compilation from Ransom Note sub label Human Endeavour.
Formed in July 2021, London duo Double Helix have spent the year since their inception carving out a distinctive sound around the UK capital, compounding various techno / rave subcultures and a tenacious punk energy into one unified, uncompromising vision. Their follow-up to debut single ‘Rat Rave’ (Slow Dance Records, January 2022) is further drawing from the well of club-oriented influences.
The hypnotic sophomore release ‘Doppelgänger’ is reminiscent of acid electronica of the 90’s, pitting the iconic sound of the Roland 303 against darker industrial tones, balearic synths and a relentless, pulsating motorik beat.
The accompanying music video is also a striking visual companion to the track. Shot and directed by the band themselves, it evokes a cinematic sensation not unlike a Gaspar Noé nightmare, with violent red strobes and a surrealist detachment. Dancer and performance artist Giorgia Pirozzi contorts and bends her body, creating intoxicating blurs of motion, whilst the bass is pounding like an anxious palpitation.
Human Endeavour is the newest addition to Ransom Note Records’ family of sub-labels. Curated and run by Ransom Note Editor, and one half of DJ duo Kiara Scuro, Rosie Ama Cain, the label will be a “space for artists who are exploring the dark, deep and hypnotic corners of the musical spectrum.” For the inaugural release, six artists have come together for ‘Trains Of Thought’: a Various Artists EP that gives a window into some sounds, styles and names that you’ll be hearing on the label in the future. Double Helix comprises Patrick Smith (Synths, Programming, Vocals), Kim Engelhardt (Bass Guitar), joined by a session drummer for live shows. ‘Doppelgänger’ is out on June 16th via Human Endeavour and was recorded at Arcus Sounds Studio, self-produced by Double Helix, mixed and mastered by Alastair Batchelor."
