PREMIERE: Bitumen - Moving Now Now Now (Official Video)

Nostalgia of the rich textures of floating synth sounds of the middle 80's glories. A new kind of nostalgia immersed in a volatile swinging mood. Hypnotic originality in danceable nuances. Sophisticated in its seductive powers. Deep in its intricate details, as in a subtle groovy beat drumming or in a Cure-esque semi-gothic guitar manoeuvres. If listened au passant, you could swear we're living in another era. Therefore, dive yourself into an intricate time capsule, only possible when you touch a dream as a feather the wind carries on.

“Moving Now Now Now”, the third video and single from Bitumen’s savage sophomore album, ‘Cleareye Shining’, showcases the band's epoch of expressionist impulse. Monochrome silhouettes are met with chess stylistically doused in Hollywood Regency. Bitumen’s Kate Binning embodies slick femme fatale with a choregraphed performance emphasising Binning’s affinity for stage and camera. Produced by Jenny Branagan and Andrea Blake and edited by Bitumen’s very own Bryce Maher. “Moving Now Now Now”, connects the dots between Anger’s scandalous expose ‘Hollywood Babylon’, Bob Fosse, Klaus Naomi, and the golden age of glamour noir in the MTV Music Video.

Out on digital, CD and vinyl formats. Pick up your copy here now.

PREMIERE: DANCE DIVINE 'SALVATION' EP [WRDD1]

The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere the EP 'SALVATION' from Dance Divine, out on Paris' WARRIORRECORDS. The release is documented and inspired by Dance Divine's relationship with its dragons, RAHU101 and KETU444. Between sung achievements and transmuting rage, the opus travels from techno body music to and through acid surges as well as trance spirals. The Berlin-based producer and performer aims to empower the blend between emotional intelligence and the need for compassion towards consciousness and collective care.

The 3 track EP presents two highlights, and they deserve a brief description. "Pourpre", sung in French, in luscious tones inherited from the classic Yé-Yé 60's female singers, has a seductive charm, amidst spacey swirling vibes and vibrant beats. The EP's title track "Salvation" is a Hi-Energy-Techno-Body-Music with contorting echoes à la Nina Hagen.

All tracks written, produced and performed by Dance Divine
With RAUMM on "Pourpre"
With Kill Your Idols on "From The Underground"
With Atlas Descends on "Salvation"

Pick up the release here now.

Brazilian band St. Aldo releases an album inspired by the city of São Paulo and other curious stories

After opening for Radiohead at the Allianz Park Stadium, in São Paulo, being nominated twice as Next Wave Band and Single Of The Week by BBC Radio@1, as well as featured on BBC Radio@6 in 2019, the brothers André and Murilo Faria rented a loft in the Esther building, downtown São Paulo, brought in all their gear and stayed there in a complete immersion process for ten days composing the album’s new tracks. The result is Esther Building: a mix of indie with electronics, bass lines, guitar and synths. The album has nine tracks, inspired by the city of São Paulo and other curious stories.

St. Aldo by Gabi Schmidt

São Paulo, June 2022 - On July 22, the duo Aldo, now St Aldo, releases “Esther Building”, the third album of their career. Recorded in a loft in the historic Esther Building, downtown São Paulo, the work marks a new phase for André Faria and Murilo Faria. After uncle Aldo’s passing due to Covid-19 complications (the band was named after him), the duo decided to enhance its name to honour him. In addition, they’re re-releasing their initial albums.

Two years ago, a few weeks before the lockdown, Andre and Mura rented a loft in the Esther building,  brought in all their gear and stayed there in a complete immersion process for ten days composing the album’s new tracks. “I particularly prefer to compose outside the studio, breathing less tainted oxygen, waking up and sleeping with the instrument in hand, humming whatever comes to mind, without any aspirations… That's why we love the immersion process. Because you manage to record a bunch of ideas that make sense in that time-space window, and then it’s easier and fun to pick out, rummage and choose what really communicates with yourself outside that environment. The moments together also yielded trips like Heaven's Gate (the cult) that Mura was obsessed with at the time. I remember that we pulled an all-nighter watching videos and researching the life of the founder of the cult… The only person who went to the apartment was Vitor Bossa, a friend who is a director and photographer. He took some pictures while he was there. Nothing was produced there, he just spent the day hanging out and telling us what he liked the most. I love those photos”, says André.

"In the studio you have infinite possibilities of equipment, now in the Esther Building we only had a few instruments: two or three synths, two guitars, a bass, pedals and a microphone. We wanted to somehow reproduce the first album’s indie and sloppy production that at the time was done in our own mother's house, recording the voices in the closet. The Esther Building was similar, everything was more relaxed and less serious than a professional studio. Another thing that worked well was the jams. Sometimes we spent the day just playing, enjoying and recording. It wasn't until the next day or night that we would  listen to what we did and decide to work on it. We just chose what we would somehow like to listen to out there, whether produced by us or by any other band. We play what we like to listen to, without thinking too much, trying to keep the spontaneity of the day without worrying about pleasing anyone… When we had no idea, we just looked around and something would come up. That's how we created 'Bell Jar', looking around and finding Olivier Anquier's totem next to a man with those GOLD FOR SALE signs", says Murilo.

The result is a mix of indie with electronics, bass lines, guitar and synths. The album has nine tracks, inspired by the city of São Paulo and other curious stories such as the Heaven's Gate cult, which preached that the passage of comet Halley would save the faithful who "hopped on its tail". These are the lyrics to "Comet Tail". Some characters that marked the duo's childhood also served as inspiration, such as Fofão da Augusta in "Glitterin Stain". Not to mention the corrupt councils hinted at in "Pleasant Man".

Today, The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere a new track of São Paulo based duo St. Aldo. “Scratching The Surface” comes off as a closing song of “Esther Building”. The album delivers multigenre storytelling, full of variety of sounds and moods, combining both acoustic and electronic instruments, synths, groovy rhythms and high vocals, bringing a nostalgic touch of the music of the 1970s - 1990s, as well as the indie music of the early 2010s. The album takes us on a night ride through São Paulo, passing buildings and people, where each place has a story and its own atmosphere: dreamy, playful, romantic, sentimental, etc.

Listen to “Scratching The Surface” on The Brvtalist SoundCloud and follow the band on social media.

London duo Double Helix presents hypnotic single 'Doppelgänger’ .

The track comes off as part of the debut compilation from Ransom Note sub label Human Endeavour.

Formed in July 2021, London duo Double Helix have spent the year since their inception carving out a distinctive sound around the UK capital, compounding various techno / rave subcultures and a tenacious punk energy into one unified, uncompromising vision. Their follow-up to debut single ‘Rat Rave’ (Slow Dance Records, January 2022) is further drawing from the well of club-oriented influences.

The hypnotic sophomore release ‘Doppelgänger’ is reminiscent of acid electronica of the 90’s, pitting the iconic sound of the Roland 303 against darker industrial tones, balearic synths and a relentless, pulsating motorik beat.

The accompanying music video is also a striking visual companion to the track. Shot and directed by the band themselves, it evokes a cinematic sensation not unlike a Gaspar Noé nightmare, with violent red strobes and a surrealist detachment. Dancer and performance artist Giorgia Pirozzi contorts and bends her body, creating intoxicating blurs of motion, whilst the bass is pounding like an anxious palpitation.

Human Endeavour is the newest addition to Ransom Note Records’ family of sub-labels. Curated and run by Ransom Note Editor, and one half of DJ duo Kiara Scuro, Rosie Ama Cain, the label will be a “space for artists who are exploring the dark, deep and hypnotic corners of the musical spectrum.” For the inaugural release, six artists have come together for ‘Trains Of Thought’: a Various Artists EP that gives a window into some sounds, styles and names that you’ll be hearing on the label in the future. Double Helix comprises Patrick Smith (Synths, Programming, Vocals), Kim Engelhardt (Bass Guitar), joined by a session drummer for live shows. ‘Doppelgänger’ is out on June 16th via Human Endeavour and was recorded at Arcus Sounds Studio, self-produced by Double Helix, mixed and mastered by Alastair Batchelor."

Grotto Terrazza announces his new 12 track LP on Maple Death Records.

Add color, reframe, follow the prism, and head to the beach. Not sure if we’d ever be talking about Grotto Terrazza, the Munich based art/music/life project of Thomas Schamann (also known as the drummer of dark post-punk band Bleib Modern) in these terms, but here we are, adjusting to his ever-evolving collage of life in the form of his new album ‘Kalte Köstlichkeiten’, an ecstatic uptempo, punchy mitteleuropa celebration of punks in the city.

If his 2019 debut ‘Stumpfer Gegenstand’ (also co-released by Cut Surface and Maple Death) introduced us to Grotto Terrazza’s beautiful intimate translucent dark-beat poetry set over art-punk rhythmic, foggy nightclubs and musk-induced industrial malaise, Kalte Köstlichkeiten sets the record straight by adding a whole new dimension.

Cold Delicacies (the literal translation) delivers so much more, 12 melting popsicles that furiously jump from dance floor post-punk, brazen EBM, funk sleaze and smoked-out cold-wave. What really ties Thomas’ musical world together is the scattered use of field recordings, musique concrète and quite literally… life, all sprinkled across his oeuvre, his personal secret weapon, turning an already detailed album into a scrap journal with laser focus. Songs like Inspektor Ginko, Die Zitronenmelodie and Tokamak continue in his tradition of Neubatenesque art-wave, an imaginary OST for any Kaurismaki setting, rhythmical murder ballads, Neue Deutsche Welle; Grotto Terrazza’s nightlife is soundtracked by the incredible trio of Senza Piombo 95, Der Zaubergeselle and Krank In Der City, three leathered-up EBM crankers that delve into proto-rave territory and cut their teeth on motorik bass and syncopated fluo. I can’t help picturing video games played at dawn, sidewalks spitting out the heatwave and streetlights buzzing away when listening to Long Ayran Ice-Tea, Tropische Krankheiten and Kurze Arme, another triptych that unites romantic joyfulness, chipmunk hyper-pop, pulsating strobes and drum machine punk swirling across the universe.

Kalte Köstlichkeiten, a refreshing cold delicacy on a hot summer’s night. Death disco, new beat and conscious dada all collapsed, like an orange umbrella sitting on a solitary beach. Swim with Grotto Terrazza.

Today, we are happy to premiere one of the singles of his upcoming LP, called “Der Zaubergeselle”. The following track delivers a nostalgic touch to the 1980s, combining motives of multiple music genres, such as dark disco, EBM, synth wave and post-punk. It’s a mixture of fun, mysterious, happy and sentimental moods, which with the dreamy vocals brings us into a journey of an old-school movie, which you can now watch on YouTube. This DIY music video was recorded and directed by Grotto Terrazza himself on his VHS camera, which makes it possible to experience the whole audiovisual perspective of the artist.

This must-have banger you can buy today on Bandcamp. The full LP will be available on August 26th in vinyl and digital formats. Follow the artist on Instagram and Facebook.

Grotto Terrazza’s ‘Kalte Köstlichkeiten’ is released on LP/Digital by Maple Death and Cut Surface. All music, recording and art by Thomas Schamann. Mixed, mastered and recorded by Andor Bencze. Cover illustration by Rosa Kammermeier.
