New Brvtalism No. 191 - LDY OSC + Artefactos De Dolor

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from LDY OSC. The solo project of Alyssa Barrera Auvinen, the Vienna-based, Mexican artist began her musical trajectory in the late 90’s, traveling to Monterrey, Mexico to see DJ’s play before becoming one herself, playing at clubs like Aura, Topaz and Bar Americas. In 2010 she relocated to New York City to attend school, majoring in Music and Sound Engineering. She was always inspired by heavier sounds, something she picked up from her brother who was in an industrial band. Since 2013, Alyssa has been a self taught electronics enthusiast, working on modular kits, DIY synths and more. Her first release came in 2018 on The Bunker New York and a new LP is forthcoming this year on Kontra-Musik. New Brvtalism No. 191 masterfully explores the LDY OSC sound, from rich textures, dark rhythmic moods and immersive atmospheres. Includes track from Damcase (RIP), Mika Vainio (RIP), Pan Sonic, LDY OSC, Interstellar Funk & Parrish Smith, Christian Vogel, Vanligt Folk, Artefactos de Dolor, Cindytalk, Franck Vigroux and more.

Artefactos De Dolor - La Niña

In addition to her solo work, Alyssa is also the vocalist for experimental post-punk act Artefactos De Dolor (Spanish for Pain Artifacts). Along with Todd Sines and Charles Noel, the trio is set to release their debut album, La Niña, at the end of the month. The album is a cathartic exercise, confronting the pain that exists in all of us. Each song exposes a facet of pain that manifests inside the outsider; the local; the nomad; the hermit; the dreamer; the thinker; the scorned; the lover. We’ve been following the group for a little bit and love their take on different genres and the pure ritual experience of the live show. Artefactos presents a powerful sound which is clearly influenced by the human experience and we’re excited for the first LP. Expect it out July 29th via Rush Hour Distribution.

New Brvtalism No. 190 - Uun

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Uun. The Detroit-based artist has been one of our favorite producers of the past couple years and his dark, crushing productions have seen standout releases on labels like MORD and Soma. In addition, Uun is also at the helm of Ego Death, his own imprint to showcase the scope of his productions. The label explores themes of existentialism, duality, and what it means to be an artist in the modern era. In addition, he is also involved in Modern Cathedrals, the Detroit-based event series which presents eerie, broken beat techno and recently saw its first event in Berlin as well.

New Brvtalism No. 190 is a powerful entry to a series. Showcasing many of Uun’s own productions as well as massive works from the likes of Headless Horseman, Korridor, Surit, Altstadt Echo, Kwartz and more. Be sure to also check for his latest release on MORD and upcoming on Modularz.

Mala Herba - "Wszystko marność" Video Premiere

The Brvtalist is proud to premiere the first video from Mala Herba. The non-binary Polish artist and activist reveals "Wszystko marność”, referring to Polish traditions of winter songs about death, decay and Dance Macabre - a popular medieval art trope representing the dance of death. Originally released on independent cassette label TRANSFORMER, the track has been freshly remixed and represents the artist’s new direction - one of dark, danceable and mature production while staying true the original witchy characteristics of the project. Active since 2017, Mala Herba is the solo project of sound artist and queer music activist Zosia Hołubowska. Based on traditional music, magic and demonology of Eastern Europe, Mala Herba explores queerness and sex-positivity. They are also a member of Oramics, a Polish platform dedicated to strengthening the visibility of women, queer and non-binary artists in electronic music and promoting the Easten European scene. Oramics also functions as a collective booking agency.

The video was recorded on a VHS camera and the DIY production was also 100% femme and queer lead. The crew shot in the basement of Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna as well as queer feminist housing project “Rosa Lilla Villa”. The clip is an astounding work of mystic synths and witchy rhythms all which hypnotized us upon first watch. You can pick up the track here.

New Brvtalism No. 188 - The Lady Machine

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix by The Lady Machine. Originally from Brazil, she spent years at the forefront of the underground scene of her home country and her skills ultimately took her to parties across the world. Now based in Berlin, she is a regular at institutions like Tresor, Pornceptual, Staub and more. After completing a degree in Music Production, she then founded her own label Unterwegs, which will host her debut release in October 2019.

Her contribution to our series is a massive installment featuring her mechanical sound - ranging from driving techno to punishing rhythms. It was recorded in one take using 95% vinyl and 5% of forthcoming original material. We are also thrilled to witness The Lady Machine on July 24th at Griessmüehle for Krake Festival. She will be a part of Paula Temple’s Noise Manifesto showcase which also includes Femanyst, SøS Gunver Ryberg and more. Orden x Sandro Marzo

Sandro Marzo is one of fashion’s brightest new stars. A graduate of Basel’s Institute of Fashion Design and a Swiss Design Award winner, Marzo brings a fresh perspective of individualism, textiles and more to his high concept collections. His SS2020 is inspired in party by the Fibonacci Sequence and uses nomadic identifies, reused fabrics and more, opening a new chapter of his work and presenting a collection that celebrates community and environment.

On July 4th the designer is partnering with Brvtalist favorite Orden for a new presentation and party at OHM Berlin. The event will mark the launch of Marzo’s SS2020 collection with a site specific installation early in the night.

For the event: imagine three replicas of Giacometti’s "L’homme qui marche“, caught frozen in the motion of walking. The audience is invited to encounter them and will find them wearing three main looks. Split up in Red, Grey and Black (RGB) the replicas will represent a mix of color and surface. Within the walls of OHM, Sandro Marzo creates an interactive playground surrounded by mirrors which create the missing link between space, audience and fashion itself. Coco Chanel knew: With her mirrored staircase she could see both the audience and the showcased couture. Whoever is entering the installation can reenact her voyeurism.

Following the presentation, Orden will also present an afterparty featuring some of today’s top talent. Included are the dynamic sounds of DJ Gigola, on the heels of a new album - a live set by SSSS, The Marquis (live), Bonnie and Agency (Instruments of Discipline) on closing duties. This will be a spectacular evening of multiple mediums with a late night party to move your body. To commemorate the collaboration, Marzo and Orden developed a limited run of shirts which may also be available at the event so keep your eyes open.

Helmut Newtown - SUMO + Q&A

Few photographers are as influential as Helmut Newton. The German artist’s career spanned decades and he left his imprint across the worlds of fashion, photography, fine art and more. In 1999 iconic book publisher TASCHEN released its first monumental art book titled Helmut Newton’s SUMO. The tomb was presented in exceptionally large format measuring 70 x 50 cm, included a metal stand designed by Philipp Stark and all 10,000 copies were signed by Newton himself. Upon its release, the world was shocked by the book’s superfluous size but its importance and images were undeniable and it quickly became iconic. To top it off, a celebrity signed copy for a charity event became the most expensive photo book of the 20th century.

In 2009, Berlin’s Helmut Newton Foundation staged an entire show dedicated to the legendary book. The exhibition contained all 464 images from SUMO framed, hung and displayed side by side to be viewed literally all at once. For many it was the first time the contents could be seen in person and it would go on to be an important moment in the museum’s history. Now, 10 years after the first exhibition and 20 years after the book release, SUMO returns to its original home for a new presentation of the stunning photographs.

To compliment SUMO, there is also Three Boys From Pasadena, an exhibition featuring Newton’s former assistants, Mark Arbeit, George Holz and Just Loomis. Each artist will be given their own space where Arbeit will show life sized photograms of female models as well as toy dolls. Holz will present his Hollywood portraits which include Madonna, Nicolas Cage and a now infamous photo of Donald and Melania Trump. In the third room, Just Loomis builds on his Americana series from 1999 with fabulous “Backstage” works showing the other side of the glitz and glamor of the modeling industry. As if that were not enough, also included is the private photo collection of Helmut and June Newton. This is a dedicated space showcasing some of the couple’s personal photographs which were located at their home in Monte Carlo. As expected, this is a breathtaking presentation which includes works by other artists, signed photos and beyond. A must see and an intimate look into the couple’s life.

To celebrate the opening of SUMO, we are thrilled to present a Q&A with the show’s curator Matthias Harder. We speak with Mr. Harder about reviving the show, the everlasting influence of Newton and more. See below.

The Brvtalist: 20 years after the SUMO publication and 10 years after the first exhibition, what was the inspiration to revive the SUMO and stage this show?

Matthias Harder: We already organized exhibitions on the basis of Newton’s publication at the Helmut Newton Foundation in the past, and this transformation is extraordinary: you are surrounded by iconic pictures in the exhibition rooms which you normally see just on doubles pages in a book and in a different size. SUMO is not only an incredible publication in an enormous size and amount of 464 pages, as an exhibition of these pages it is also an unforgettable experience for all visitors.

TB: How does this show differ, if at all, from the previous exhibitions?

MH: Sometimes we display Newton’s vintage prints, sometimes posthumous ones. We have a huge in-house-archive and do exhibitions on all different topics of Newton’s oeuvre. But the SUMO show spreads out all facets and genres of his work. It is a “best-of” compiled by Helmut and June Newton in 1999 and thus, it is still very authentic. We can follow his unrivaled career over the years with our eyes from page to page – and see on the other hand all in once.

TB: Talk about the importance/inclusion of Newton's assistants with Three Boys From Pasadena.

MH: It was in California around 1980 that Newton met three young photography students: Mark Arbeit, George Holz, and Just Loomis, who would assist him with his work in the following years. The apprenticeship became friendship over the years, and now you can find more than 50 photographs per artist and exhibition room at the Helmut Newton Foundation. Looking at the work of Arbeit, Holz, and Loomis today, we can detect some influence of Newton and sometimes other photographers like Man Ray and Irving Penn, even though they have each developed their own unique style. Thus, I am very happy to be able to host this show again, ten years later, extended by new work from the Three Boys from Pasadena.

TB: Newton's work remains as popular as ever and continues to be discovered by new, younger fans. In your view, what are some reasons for this?

MH: In the current show, you see again a great selection of images, full of timeless elegance and subtle seduction. Newton transcended genres, bringing style and voyeurism to fashion and glamour photography – which not only describes but also redefines the spirit of the times. He tells us exciting and surprising stories with images. And this works until now. Therefore, I am not surprised by the younger Newton fans that we find nowadays also via the social media channels.

TB: Any closing thoughts about the exhibition?

MH: We are happy about the long-time collaboration with TASCHEN publishing that distributes the SUMO and other Newton books to many places worldwide. We can be pretty proud, with the engagement of our Foundation and such partners, that we fulfill our aim: Helmut Newton still lives on.

New Brvtalism No. 187 - Pris

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Pris. The Berlin-based DJ, producer and co-founder of Empathy, delivers a razor sharp mix fueled by cybernetic rhythms and high speed tekno experimentations. We also take a look at Pris’ latest EP, New Babylon, below.

Pris - New Babylon EP (EMPATHY)

Empathy is a recently launched mixed media project between Pris and his close friend and enigmatic house producer Deejay Astral (Steel City Dance Disc’s, Shall Not Fade, Who’s Susan) who worked alongside Pris for their previous imprint, Resin, providing art direction. It marks an exciting new chapter for Pris who has recently released on labels including Non Series, Avian, Semantica, Envra and Propaganda Moscow.

New Babylon is the first release on the imprint and represent’s the duo’s emphasis on limited physical format, releasing only 25 records on 180 gram vinyl and produced locally by Disc Archive Berlin. The music showcases Pris’ refined approach to production and the tracks transmit a highly sophisticated take on other worldly technology and digital enslavement. This is an excellent EP from the beautifully agonizing “Corruption” to the deep atmospheres of “Kink” and terminating with the glistening sounds of “Vanity”. June Projects at Paris Fashion Week

For those who will be in French capital this week for the always exciting Paris Men’s Fashion Week be sure to catch the collection launch of June Projects. Titled “catharsis”, the collection's narrative is derived from the Catharsis Theory and some Sartre passages from No Exit.

Artistic Director Jamie Parkhurst has crafted a striking collection of casual yet sophisticated garments infused with a laid back California attitude. From chic leather jackets and bombers to workwear inspired tops (and bottoms), we also appreciate the catharsis theme and love the imagery on the tees and sweatshirts.

Also check out this great video prepared by the team for the first collection.

To help celebrate the launch of the label, June will also be partnering with Blackfist with additional support from Aufnahme + Wiedergabe and Third Coming Records for a party at Petit Bain on June 22nd featuring a stacked lineup of Panzer, Poison Point (live), Nostromo (live) and Salem Unsigned (see flyer below).

New Brvtalism No. 186 - Katie Rex

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Katie Rex. The New York City-based DJ, producer and event innovator has made a name for herself both on and off the dance floor with her dynamic sets and community focused programming from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and beyond.

With roots beginning in the Philadelphia rave scene, her passion for the underground has crossed genre boundaries and culminated into an in-depth knowledge of music and cultural trends after dark. Her sets fuse industrial sonic landscapes with club inspired drum patterns for a unique blend of playfulness with the harsher sides of techno. She's shared the bill with top artists across genres, staying true to her passion for progressive sounds. Since 2016, Rex has curated the formidable event series turned lifestyle platform, BOUND. As a proud BOUND alumni and long time collaborator, The Brvtalist can personally attest to Rex’s passion and forward thinking approach to club nights and we are honored to have her contribute to our series.
