Trance - UY Studio Two Year Anniversary

On December 30th, 2015, Berlin fashion and art collective UY Studio celebrated two years of conception and transformation. To mark the occasion, the company put on a great event which featured incredible dance, music and art.

The theme of the night was transition: transition of appearance, transition of perception, and transition of self. Throughout the night the audience was invited to experience and interact with the performance, creating a fragile environment of reception and presentation, the push and pull of energies. Choreographer Kiani Del Valle created these transitional choreographic performances all through the night. Photographer Monica Lek was on hand and captured some amazing photographs and The Brvtalist is excited to share them with you.

Monica had this to say about the evening:

I met Idan and Fanny (UY founders) at University. When we graduated, we all moved to different places. I moved to NY and they went to Berlin. We were far away but our hearts and hunger for life kept us connected, even more than before. Our work will always be symbiotic. I got lucky to be in Berlin for their second anniversary and it was pure magic. Idan and Fanny have not created a fashion brand, they have created a movement, an inspirational way to live. Whether you are into what they do or not, their ability to bring people together, is a form of freedom. Their parties make you feel there’s still hope, almost like 80’s underground New York parties, the ones that have vanished thanks to our millennial society. To collaborate with UY is always a pleasure, they are my dear friends, and without even talking, we blend into what we know how to do best. We know each other’s desires just by looking at our eyes. On a personal level, it’s great to come to Berlin to visit your friends, knowing that they work their ass of to bring you the best party ever, with the best casting of people and energy. The night was like visiting your subconscious. It was brutal, sexy, timeless and mythological.

The Brvtalist would like to thank UY Studio and photographer Monica Lek for these amazing images. We have been fans of the label the moment we saw their work and continue to admire their conceptual approach to art, unisex fashion and progressive events. We look forward to seeing more from this great brand. For more information please visit UY Studio and Monica Lek. Credits for the night as follows:

Opal Tapes 2016 Preview

The Brvtalist is proud to present an exclusive mix previewing forthcoming material from the UK's Opal Tapes. Assembled by Lumisokea, the mix contains excerpts of tracks from the stellar additions to the label's catalog. Known for their commitment to releasing thought provoking material across a wide range of genres, there are few labels who have put together such an impressive string of releases covering techno, house and experimental electronics. We are thrilled to have an exclusive look at what lies ahead for Opal Tapes in 2016 (track list below).

Available on January 22nd, is the latest release by Berlin-based experimental artist Lumisokea. Titled, Transmissions from Revarsavr, the album builds expertly on past material (Apophenia, Mnemosyne) - taking the listener deeper and deeper into an electro-acoustic world where modern technology and electronic experimentation, collide with traditional rhythm science from India and Korea. Transmissions is an incredibly unique and hypnotizing work that pays tribute to the visionary inventors and composers of the early 20th century from the former Soviet Union.

Lumisokea - Transmission from Revarsavr (Opal Tapes, 2016)

From the artist:

The point of departure for Transmissions from Revarsavr was a recording Lumisokea made in early 2014 of Vladimir Popov’s “Noise Instruments” - remarkable mechanical contraptions designed in the 1920’s to imitate the sounds of the coming industrial era. Like the “Noise Instruments”, many of these initially outlandish and far-fetched sounds have imperceptibly become self-evident to present-day music, while pioneers such as Arseny Avraamov (aka Revarsavr) and Vladimir Popov have been largely forgotten.

The "Noise Machines" used in the recording are courtesy of The Music Laboratory (Moscow) and were recorded at the ReNoise exhibition in Berlin by Lumisokea. Lumisokea would like to give special thanks to Konstantin Dudakov-Kashuro, Peter Aido and Evgenia Vorobyeva for the permission to use and record the reproductions of Vladimir Popov’s “Noise Instruments".

The Brvtalist would like to thank Opal Tapes and Lumisokea for this exclusive content and we look forward to all of the great releases in the year ahead. Transmissions from Revarsavr will be available on January 22nd as will a 12" by Sciarhi to be released on Black Opal. For more information on Opal Tapes please visit Bandcamp, Soundcloud and Facebook. For Lumisokea, please visit www.lumisokea.com and simon@disk-agency.de for bookings.

New Brvtalism No. 040

A new sun appears and with it brings hope and despair. A new day is here, but the clouds still linger.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix by Moscow-based producer Nick Larkin. Innovative DJ and composer of rhythmic gems, Larkin also runs Dionysus, a young label that has already had a few great releases in the techno genre.

A Dada artist and sound engineer originally from Moscow, Nick first began exploring sound in 2005. He currently works with the studio Labrynth, as well as running the Dionysus label. We love his broad range of references and in his music one can sense a deep, endless atmosphere which is only enhanced by his technical abilities. Nick spends most of his time in his studio in Moscow, working on both sound and painting. We would like to thank Nick for the first New Brvtalism of 2016 and we look forward to seeing more from him and Dionysus. For more information please visit Facebook and Soundcloud.

As the seconds tick away you reflect on the year that was. Agony and suffering were the only common themes. You embrace a new beginning. Cherish these moments as they may be your last.

We would like to thank our readers and listeners for their incredible support and we look forward to more New Brvtalism in 2016. Until next year.....

New Brvtalism No. 039

Submerged into a pool of darkness, one hand is still above water. A pull comes from above, but you let it slip away. Drifting below the surface is where you belong.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix by Sweden's Celldöd. One of the most exciting artists operating today, Anders Karlsson's project is an absolutely perfect mix of EBM, minimal synth, industrial and techno. His latest release, Mekaniskt Gransland, has become one of the best reviewed albums of 2015 and with good reason. The record's combination of tough, pulsating rhythms and sweeping experimental atmospheres, strikes an excellent balance between the past and the future. New Brvtalism No. 039 is an ode to the past. A vinyl mix that dives deep into the underground of 80's pop. Perfect for solo listening or winter gatherings.

We would like to thank Celldöd for his amazing contribution and we look forward to hearing new material in the coming year. For more information please visit Facebook and Suction Records.

Lexemes & øjeRum

The Brvtalist is pleased to feature the upcoming split cassette by Copenhagen-based artist øjeRum and American Lexemes. We have been big fans of øjeRum's visual art, specifically his hand made collages, that we featured on the site back in June.  We were very pleased to discover that he is also a sound artist, operating in the genres of ambient, atmospherics and noise. California-based Lexemes is linked to similar genres, releasing a few strong EPs on labels like Orcus Editions .

938750_929005273802772_1171398776_o.jpg

The split cassette from the two artists is aptly described as "atmospheric ritualism", with each side serving as the unintentional compliment to its inverse.  Listening to the release quickly submerges the listener into a introspective cloud of dark, droning environments that evoke feelings of somber nights and ceremonial practices. The cassette is limited to 100 with 70 being clear and 30 grey. We also love the art insert as it includes the entire series of "The Forest is Sleeping Within the Trees", the works that we previously featured here on The Brvtalist. The beautiful packaging mixed with three stellar long compositions make this an excellent purchase. For your listening please we have included side 1 here:

The cassette is currently available for pre-order on Grimoire Cassette Cvlture. For more information on the artists please visit øjeRum and Lexemes.

Popsimonova - "Drive"

The Brvtalist is proud to premiere the music video for Popsimonova's "Dive". This is a great track taken off the album Brokedown Palace, the latest release and first solo album by the Croatian electronic music artist. Out now on Rotterdam's Electronic Emergencies, we immediately fell in love with Lana Jastrevski's fusion of electro and body music, crafting a complete record that is influenced by the 80's, techno, rave culture, the occult and more. We have been big fans of Popsimonova for some time, admiring her works on such great labels as Gooiland Elektro. Lana's use of hypnotic lyrics and powerful rhythms seduce the listener into a trance, leaving us begging for more and falling completely under her spell. While Lana herself does not do interviews, we were able to speak with Electronic Emergencies about her new record, the video and her body of work. Read more after the premiere:

From Electronic Emergencies:

La POPSIMONOVA does not give interviews. She thinks that what she has to say should be clear by listening to her music. She has authorized us, Spacemaker and Leather E of Rotterdam label Electronic Emergencies, to speak to The Brvtalist. Lana’s first solo album Brokedown Palace was released on Electronic Emergencies on 16 November 2015.

We know POPSIMONOVA well. She became a good friend and we admire her as a person and as an artist. We were both fans of her early work and befriended her on social media. Usually, that kind of online contact is rather superficial, but with Lana it was different. We talked about music, emotions, the future, things which are not so common. She is an inspiring person. When she had a gig in Rotterdam about two years ago, we planned on meeting her afterwards and get acquainted. But before everything started, a small but fierce women walked up to us and said: you must be……. At that time we hadn't started our label yet. We got along very well, and when we decided to start Electronic Emergencies, Lana was on our wish list. We asked her if she wanted to have a release on our label and she was very enthusiastic. We agreed that she would send tracks when finished, and we expected to release a 12inch.

As time passed, we grew more curious about the tracks. Then, all of a sudden, Lana sent us 11 tracks at once and we were flabbergasted. After listening to them, we called her and asked if she would like to release an album.

The Brvtalist: Brokedown Palace is the first solo album by Popsimova. What was her approach to creating a full length record and what is the idea or concept behind it?

Electronic Emergencies: After some major changes in her personal and musical life, Lana was making music on her own for the first time in a long time. Brokedown Palace is the result of this challenging period where she had to re-invent herself and deal with the past. The album is a fierce and emotional statement, a state of independence. The tracks are upbeat, nervous, restless and emotionally heavy. The lyrics are personal and reflect Lana’s complex and intelligent inner world. Is it techno, EBM, electro or is it the new wave of wave? We don’t know. But the combination of strict and haunting beats with the melodic and sad yet strong voice captured us instantly, on the dance floor and in our living room.

TB: How has the sound of Pompsimonova evolved? Also, how does Brokedown Palace build upon some of her past EPs on Gooiland Elektro, 0.5 and more?

EE: Brokedown Palace is a reflection of an important period, which was made during a relatively short time without any restrictions or expectations. It really is a solo album - the music and lyrics have, with the exception of Hey you, been created by Lana herself, just the way she wanted to…

Video still: Ingeborg Jansen

TB: Talk about the concept behind the video for "Drive".

EE: We asked Ingeborg Jansen, a Dutch documentary filmmaker and dear friend, to record the live gig of POPSIMONOVA during Electronic Emergencies’ label night at club BAR in Rotterdam in November, as well as the official album presentation at Margreeth Olsthoorn’s fashion store the next day. Ingeborg used footage from both events to make a promotional video for Drive, one of our favorite tracks on Brokedown Palace. She wanted to show her fierce and simultaneously vulnerable image and the intimate atmosphere that Lana creates during a live gig. It was the first time many in the audience had seen her perform live and the shows were a huge success.

TB: What's next for Popsimonova?

EE: Next up is a live show at the BIM Festival in Antwerpen, Belgium, on Friday, December 18, 2015. The video for Drive is a good indication what we can expect.

We would like to thank Popsimonova and Electronic Emergencies for granting us the privilege of premiering the video for "Drive" and speaking to us about the new album, video and more. For more information and music please visit Soundcloud.

New Brvtalism No. 038

The mind weakens and programming has begun. Into the darkest corridor you retreat. Hope unravels and the light has ceased.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a live mix by legendary New York City-based artist The Horrorist. Active for over two decades, Oliver Chesler, aka The Horrorist, has produced an incredible body of work that spans the genres of techno, industrial, EBM, minimal synth, hardcore, gabber, pop and others. Chesler has also become well known for his punishing one man live act as well as DJ appearances at some of the best parties around the globe.

On November 20th, 2015, The Horrorist performed at legendary Los Angeles party Das Bunker. The following night, November 21st, Chesler made a special DJ appearance at Volume 1 of The Brvtalist Showcase at The Lash. Along with Andi and M/A/N/Ø/S, the night couldn't have been more fitting for the first edition of our party. We are pleased to release this mix which was recorded live that night and can now truly live forever in infamy.

The Brvtal List Part III

The Brvtalist is proud to present the third and final installment of The Brvtal List 2015. We close out this year's list with some of our favorite collaborators from the past year. Happy gift giving and we are already looking forward to next year.

CVLT NATION

Vancouver (www.cvltnationbizarre.com)

Nathaniel Shannon – KING DIAMOND, NYC 2014 11x14 - $50 - Art is the best and most lasting gift, especially when it’s a sick photo of King Diamond! Here’s one of NYC photographer Nathaniel Shannon’s shots, signed and numbered from a limited run of 25 prints. Available at Cvlt Nation Bizarre.

NOCTURNA - I. NYCTOPHILIAC - $45.00.

I. NYCTOPHILIAC

(n.) love of darkness or night. Finding relaxation or comfort in the darkness.

Nocturna’s candles are handmade to order and packaged beautifully. A perfect gift for that witchy, meditative someone. At Cvlt Nation Bizarre.

Wolf+Sadie - THEURGY CUFF RING – $87.00. Another made to order piece, the Theurgy Cuff ring in sterling silver from Wolf+Sadie. We recently were lucky to see all of Wolf+Sadie’s collection in person at a local designer marketplace put on by Other Vancouver, and this ring is amazing in person! At Cvlt Nation Bizarre.

Consouling Sounds - Wiegedood - Logo (t-shirt) - $20.00. When Belgium’s Wiegedood came out with their debut De Doden Hebben Het Goed this year, we knew we were hearing something legendary. Share your underground black metal knowledge and pick up this Wiegedood logo t-shirt from Consouling Sounds. At Cvlt Nation Bizarre.

Hooftarded Fromthesky - CHEERS! Hard Enamel Pin - $8.50. Drunken opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one and they’re all sitting overnight in central lock up with a big ass footprint on ‘em. Remind yourself with these wise words on an enamel pin from Hooftarded Fromthesky. At Cvlt Nation Bizarre.

Cvlt Nation Bizarre Gift Card - If you can’t decide, you can always pick up a CVLT Nation Bizarre Gift Certificate! Available here.

The Brvtalist (Jeremy)

Los Angeles (www.thebrvtalist.com)

Dark & Somber Greetings Krampusnacht Gift Cards- Often times, the most difficult thing to find someone is a good greeting card. That's where Dark & Somber comes in. Their Black Metal inspired cards have been the perfect way to send a holiday greeting and this year they've released a gift pack which includes three new Krampus cards illustrated by artist Farron Loathing. Definitely give these to all your friends. Available at Amoeba.

The Devil and The Universe - "Benedicere" LP. I really wanted to include the limited box set but it sold out before I could post it! The purple vinyl and jacket is still beautiful and I've really been looking forward to this album. TDATU goes beyond music and crafts truly mystifying works that invoke spiritual and magical elements. Preparation for this record included travelling to the most visited pilgrimage site in the world- Lourdes, France, as well as to the Spanish Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey and the Vatican in Rome. Get it here.

Balenciaga Marble High Sneaker. If you've been following The Brvtalist on social media you know that I currently have an obsession with marble. Whether white or black, nothing quite walks the line between classic elegance and progressive design more. These shoes are one of the best ways to implement marble into your wardrobe. Keep in mind, this will work best for minimalists. All black (or white) with these shoes will be the perfect outfit. At Balenciaga.

The works of Suzy Poling. Suzy has been one of my favorite artists for quite some time. I can't think of anyone else who creates such strong works across so many different mediums. Whether sound or visual art I always seem to love everything (can you see why?). Lucky for us, her new venture will make it even easier to pick up her creations. Along with Christopher Reid Martin (another great sound and visual artist), the duo have launched Arcsine Trade. Here, you can acquire prints, tote bags (which are amazing), t-shirts and more, without the huge gallery price tag. There's something for everyone. Launching December 10th. www.arcsinetrade.com

Julius Black Single Button Blazer. I love blazers with a unconventional twist. Whether it be leather trim, interesting cuts or standout fabrics, there's no single item of clothing that means more business. From breakfast to cocktails to gala, it is really all you need. This jacket caught my eye due to its geometric qualities and luxurious fabric. Made by Julius, a killer Japanese label. Available at Ssense.

Whipsnake Accessory - Hvnter Gvtherer. There's been so many great accessories I've loved this year. I've never really been one to wear jewelry but over the past couple of years I can't get enough of rings and bracelets. I was very excited to see one of my favorite designers come out with a leather collection and this Whipsnake accessory is great. A wearable fetish object, it can be wrapped on the wrist, arm, leg, ankle or used as a hair accessory. It doesn't get more versatile than that. Made to order from salvaged leather. At Hvnter Gvtherer.

Clog Books. There is perhaps no better series of books on architecture than Clog. From Brutalism to Miami to Sci Fi, they cover all of the coolest topics and give you an amazing overview in a small, yet beautiful package. I own Brutalism, which has since sold out, and it's one of my most prized possessions. Now is an important time to buy as Clog is selling out all of their current 14 editions. These are highly sought after and have become somewhat of collectors items. You only have a couple more days but I want to include this just in case you can grab one. Good luck!! At Clog.

Material Lust (Christian Lopez Swafford)

artist/designer, NYC (www.material-lust.com)

Zana Bayne Gunther Harness Vest. Elevated bondage gear for your inner sadist. At Zana Bayne.

Vinyl is the only way to buy music nowadays.  It conquers your ADD and makes you listen to whole album.  If you like industrial there is one band that has carried the flag into the modern era: 3TEETH.  Doesn't hurt that my brother is in the band.  At Storming the Base.

We only celebrate Pagan holidays in our studio.  The perfect gift is the Pagan Chair by us. At 1st dibs.

These are perfect for the world traveler that wants to make a statement.  Usually that statement is "I have important shit in here, don't talk to me." At Pelican.

I've owned a lot of black boots and I keep going back to Dr. Martens.  The mono version is the only version that is truly all black.  At Dr. Martens.

Deb Demure

musician/artist, Los Angeles (Drab Majesty)

James Bond Lotus submarine. It's so absurd and selling for 1 million dollars on eBay. No doubt I would take this thing into the abyss and zone out listening to ambient music. At ebay.

Hands free bubble umbrella. Great for limiting interaction with people and maintaining some amount of privacy in public spaces. At Nubrella.

A pool table that acts like a pool. I enjoy pool and I enjoy a good play on words even more. From Obscura.

This is a jellyfish aquarium. I may like this photo more than I would like to have this in my home however, jelly fish are without a doubt the dreamiest of fish. At Groupon.

Sliderider.
Who wouldn't want this. I have stairs in my home leading to the front door. I am all about making a proper and dramatic exit when starting the night, however I can't say it would be all that fun coming home tired, three sheets to the wind, and trying to scramble up a 45 degree angle slide. At Quirky.

Thank you again to all of our contributors. We hope that you have discovered not only great gifts, but new artists, designers, musicians and more. From fantasy to reality, there are always new things to be found.

The Brvtal List Part II

Let the gift giving continue. Part II of The Brvtal List includes more of our favorite artists, designers, musicians and more. Enjoy!

Heather Gabel

All of the Anu Tera pieces I've seen are beautiful and powerful, their jewelry and accessories could easily double as weapons, but I've had my eye on these high waisted hand stitched lambskin shorts going on a few years now. They'd be great on and off stage. At AnuTera.

Bloodmilk is a small, independent jewelry maker based in Philadelphia. The delicate detail and personal nature of their collections is always intriguing. This talon brooch is my current favorite. At Bloodmilk.

This hand blended scent of essential oils by musician/vocalist Chelsea Wolfe is the perfect mix of dirt and brightness. I've gone through one vial already, it's really lovely. At Hello, Merch.
