The spring 2013 exhibition organized by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be PUNK: Chaos to Couture. The exhibition, on view from May 9 through August 14, 2013 (preceded on May 6 by The Costume Institute Benefit), will examine punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the 1970s through its continuing influence today. via The Met Museum

“Like hip hop, ballroom encompasses many different elements of artistic expression, from music and language to clothes and design, and, of course, dance. It deals directly with some of society’s most controversial issues, namely sexuality, race, class, gender roles and expression, beauty modes, self-definition and competition. It doesn’t do this in the polemical style we may be used to from punk and political hip-hop, however, where topics are theorised and discussed. In ballroom these issues are lived and experienced, as a vast number of those taking part in this underground scene are transgender, working class, people of colour.” via Dangerous Minds

ANJA RUBIK IS ONE HARD-WORKING FASHION ICON. BESIDES BEING THE FOUNDER AND EDITOR OF HER OWN MAGAZINE (THE BEAUTIFUL 25) SHE’S ALSO TURNED HER ATTENTION TO SHOE DESIGN, JOINING FORCES WITH GIUSEPPE ZANOTTI TO RELEASE A CAPSULE COLLECTION. RUBIK, WHO HAS MADE REGULAR APPEARANCES IN ZANOTTI’S CAMPAIGNS SINCE SHE WAS JUST 16, WAS ASKED TO DESIGN THE CAPSULE AFTER SHE SUGGESTED THAT ZANOTTI INTEGRATE A GLAM-PUNK AESTHETIC INTO HIS WORK. THE FIVE-PIECE COLLECTION OF SUEDE AND LEATHER HEELS WAS INSPIRED BY RUBIK’S MUSICAL HEROES, DEBBIE HARRY AND DAVID BOWIE. HARRY’S PRESENCE IS EVIDENT IN THE FOOTWEAR’S SLEEK SILHOUETTES, WHILE BOWIE’S INFLUENCE IS SEEN IN THE EDGY EMBELLISHMENTS LIKE LEATHER CORSET FASTENINGS, COLLAR PIN STUDS, CHAINS AND GOLD HARDWARE.
RUBIK WAS FULLY INVOLVED IN THE COLLECTION’S DESIGN AND CREATION, EVEN TRAVELING TO ITALY TO HELP WITH PRODUCTION. THE PAIR HAVE RELEASED CAMPAIGN IMAGES TO RUN ALONGSIDE ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR THE COLLECTION’S RELEASE; THE BLACK-AND-WHITE IMAGES, LENSED BY PAOLA KUDACKI, FEATURE BOTH ZANOTTI AND RUBIK.
