As the corporate news cycle grinds ever onward, Puerto Rico has been largely forgotten other than as a minor distraction in a media circus. But as of November 6, the majprity of people remain without power. The precarious status of the country as a "territory" of the US has allowed it to be treated differently than a state of the union. Meanwhile they are US citizens, and many people living in other parts of the US, espeically New York City, have family or at least can claim lineage to Puerto Rico and feel as powerless as the electricity in their homeland.
In a show of solidarity, Chthonic Streams contacted all Latinx artists to put on a show at The Park Church Co-op, a place whose very mission is to help those in need. Please spread the word, because the crisis is not over.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Born in Lima, Peru, Maria Chávez is known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist and DJ. Accidents, coincidence and failures are themes that unite her sound sculptures, installations and other works with her solo turntable performance practice. Maria wrote her first book on her unique approach to abstract turntablism in 2012 titled, Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable (currently out of stock), a book of essays and illustrations that guide the novice turntablist to explore the world of needles and vinly through the lens of deterioration, destruction and the unexpected. Maria regularly teaches workshops introducing students to her turntable practice all over the world and has been a research fellow with the Sound Practice Research Department of Goldsmith’s University of London since 2015.
MARIO DIAZ DE LEON
Mario is a composer and performer, whose output encompasses modern classical music, experimental electronic music, and extreme metal. His debut album as composer, "Enter Houses Of" was released in 2009 on John Zorn's Tzadik label, and praised by the New York Times for its "hallucinatory intensity". A second album, entitled "The Soul is the Arena", was released in 2015 on the Denovali label, and was named a notable recording of 2015 by New Yorker Magazine. Pitchfork wrote that the album "combined his interests seamlessly into music that throbs with snarling exuberance." From 2012-2016, his solo electronic project Oneirogen (o-NI-ro-jen) toured internationally and released three full length LPs and two EPs on the Denovali label.
ANA LOLA ROMAN
A reverent polymath, Roman is an accomplished producer, and performer. Away from her flexxed-up DJ sets, she delivers soft avant-pop peppered with fuzzy, industrial ghettotech beats. She includes sample cuts and edits of vocals that permeate throughout her mixes. Piano and vocals weave out of her songs in the form of swells -at other times- a succinct, and terse beat-driven message. Amidst oscillating synths and cyclic beats, her piano builds discipline with soft tension as bass guitar touches and electro structures run beneath the surface of her tracks. Although minimal in visual scope, ALR’s sound is a maximal road-map into the duality of strict, passionate data signal sounds made with enough space available for human touch.
YOUR GRACE ADRIANNA NATALIE
Trained in music from a young age, Adrianna developed interests in clarinet, bells, choir, and vocal studies, before making her first investigations in electronic sounds via field recordings from her own apartment and around the city. In 2012, Adrianna began shaping these early efforts into something concrete. She signed to the Philadelphia-based experimental electronic label Alrealon Musique for her debut EP, a startlingly contemporary take on the industrial, noise, and techno crossover sound now dominating Europe and rising in America’s underground, Your Grace Adrianna Natalie a distinguished member of a distinct set of new talents changing the musical landscape in New York and further afield.
